India’s castle blown down by a mighty England huff and puff. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.     England huffed and puffed and blew India’s house down, much to the dismay of the ICC, the rest of all experts, and all expectations.  So, Asia in the form of Pakistan, take on England, and I would be a optimist to even venture on predicting a winner with two teams not really a popular choice who have made this World Cup final, and are capable of winning against anyone on their day.  Skipper Jos Buttler and Alex Hales smashed unbeaten 80 and 86 in whirlwind fashion to lead England on a romp to the final chasing 170. They achieved a par total with four overs to spare after an incredible run chase.  India provided the early fireworks led by prolific batters Virat Kohli 50 0ff40 balls, and Hardik Pandiya whose brutal ...

Unpredictable Pakistan upset New Zealand applecart. BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Pakistan lived upto their tag of unpredictability and confounded my predictions of a New Zealand T20 World Cup win with a fantastic allround display to forge their way into their first final in this format.  So dominant were the Pakistan attack spearheaded by  a fired up Shaheen Shah Afridi, backed by disciplined  fielding,  against a New Zealand batting line-up that looked devastating at the outset, then fell apart, after England earlier unravelled them. The Kiwis showed they had  no sign of a recovery plan, to be knocked out in total submission.  It followed the pattern of progress which suggested a New Zealand and possibly a India or England final. But now my second option appears inevitable.  India and Pakistan in a final of the T20 World Cup will rake in substantial financial gain through a sellout crowd at the ...

Sri Lanka crash out of T20 World Cup taking Australia with them – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. Sri Lanka flattered, then flopped, to exit the T20 World Cup with a bitter sweet taste in their mouth and the realisation that winning the Asia Cup and competing with the best in the world was two completely different leagues. Playing a game that was crucial to Australia’s chance to make the semi finals, Sri Lanka’s batting showed early promise then folded like a deck of cards as the middle order continued their dismal form with the bat to give England easy access to the semis.  Openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis started like a house on fire smashing the feared England attack for 39 runs off the first three and a half overs before England stemmed the tide by removing Mendis and the steady procession continued thereafter.  Nissanka, 67 with ...

New Zealand compound Sri Lanka woes – Zealand announced themselves as a serious challenger to win the T20 World Cup – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.   Glen Phillips thrived on  butterfingered Sri Lanka to pull New Zealand out of early strife, and then New Zealand’s bowlers ripped the heart out of Sri Lanka’s batting to give the Kiwis an easy 65 run win in Sydney.  The burly Middle order batsmen sprayed the Sri Lanka attack with consummate ease riding his luck on atrocious fielding to post 104 off 64 balls with 4 sixers and 10 fours to pull the New Zealanders to relative safety after an early collapse, to a defendable 167. Sri Lanka threw down the gauntlet early in the piece, then disintegrated to total disarray thanks to shocking fielding, and lapses that reduced a serious challenger to an absolute pretender, to be thrashed by a professional contender to ...

SRI LANKA WIPE THE SMILE OFF THE IRISH – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Sri Lanka’s bowlers stifled a dangerous Ireland batting line-up and then the familiar picture of an in-form Kusal Mendis stepped in, bludgeoning a hapless Irish attack, smashing an unbeaten 68 off 43 deliveries to give them a glimmer of hope of surprising many in this edition of the T20 World Cup.  A backup pace attack did an incredible job to restrict and bamboozle the Irishmen before the big guns, Wanindu Hasarsnga De Silva and Maheesh Theeksheena strangled the run flow while picking up wickets at random to give the batsmen the relief of an achievable target.  There was no panic, as the Sri Lankans plotted a cool calm and calculated chase. With little terrors in the Irish attack to deal with, there was no disorientation like in the game against Namabia. Missing explosive Pathum Nissanka, Sri Lanka ...

Sri Lanka at the T20 World Cup Preliminary Matches –by Michael Roberts In forecast to myself I thought that the Sri Lankan Squad that had snaffled the Asia Cup in the Gulf arena would face a difficult situation in Australia notwithstanding the lower-placed teams in their initial round of matches. For one, the Australian playing conditions would be quite different, both in terms of climate, pitch conditions and the size of the playing fields. For another, the Namibian team is made up of tough outback country Boer-types who do not take a backward step; while the Dutch have many experienced campaigners. The Sri Lankans have not been helped by injuries to the promising medium-pacer Madushan and then to Chameera and, now, possibly Pathum Nissanka. This meant that Lahiru Kumara was playing today, the 20thOctober. Bowling the last over with Netherlands last wicket-pair in and the injured Van der Merwe batting, ...
