Pride of the Lion’s in main frame for some fireworks at T20 World Cup – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Sri Lanka warmed up to a beautiful Melbourne spring day at the MCG and soon sounded out their intentions for the upcoming World Cup T20 tournament in Australia with a convincing 33-run win over Zimbabwe.  Fresh from a successful Asia Cup triumph, the Lankans showed no signs of letting up in different conditions by quickly adapting to the bouncier and quicker wickets here, as they rev up preparations to get through the qualifiers before the big event commencing on October 16. Early indications suggest that the flighty Lankans will trouble some of the top teams and although it seems far fetched at this stage, they certainly can emulate their previously seemingly improbable Asia Cup success.  Although warm up games don’t usually carry the same significance,  it gives some indication ...

Sri Lanka charge towards Asia Cup triumph – by Trevine Rodrigo There’s something about the choice of former England coach Chris Silverwood that has the trimmings of a good luck charm to Sri Lanka cricket. Although not directly responsible for on field success, his appointment to a turbulent team spiralling downward and out of control has been baulked. They have in fact found a way to clamber upward from a situation of near despair giving fresh hope to their suffering fans at home and around the globe. With the T20 World Cup in Australia just around the corner in October, their resurgence could not have been timed better, having to get past embarrassing qualifying rounds before playing on the big stage. If anything, Silverwood has instilled a mindset of self belief and new found confidence in a Sri Lanka squad that appeared to have lost their vision. ...

Ashes opener axed, Maxwell’s exile extended as Aussies name Test squad – by Christy Doran Source:foxsports.com.au Australia have named a 16-man Test squad for their upcoming series against Sri Lanka, with opener Marcus Harris axed and no room found for Glenn Maxwell. While there were reports that Maxwell — the short-ball specialist who has played seven Tests — would be parachuted back into the squad for the first time since 2017, Australia’s three-person selection panel rewarded the members that did the job in Pakistan in March. Instead, spinners Nathan Lyon and Mitchell Swepson, who both featured prominently in Pakistan, as well as bowling all-rounder Ashton Agar have been selected. All-rounder Mitch Marsh will provide back-up for Cameron Green, while Scott Boland is the spare seamer selected.        Inexperienced Lankans in reality check as to where they sit – By Trevine Rodrigo in Melbourne Dasun Shanaka will probably be all at sea as he leads a young and inexperienced Sri Lanka squad to Australia in what will be a fact finding mission as to where the island nation sits in the world game.  The Sri Lankans have had limited success in the past few years against all opposition but a urgent restructure of the coaching and administrative staff has seen a marginal improvement.  Under a Sports Minister in Namal Rajapaksa, who has a sporting background himself, and political clout, the commitment has been upped to a level where there’s definite signs of the former World Cup and T20 champions returning to an acceptable threat to the top rungers of cricket.  How they execute their plans in a three game series against Australia will be compelling ...

My Passion for Cricket By Anuk Kottegoda Source:Brisbane 4EB Sri Lankan Newsletter – Dæhæna – January 2022 My interest in cricket started by watching my father play with his friends when I was just 3 years. Then, I thought to myself, it will be so much fun to be a cricket player, so that my parents can cheer me when I am playing. I started playing cricket when I was 6 years old. When I was batting for the first time it felt so good. I hit the ball hard, and it went for a six. I had lot of support from my Mum and Dad. They came to see all of my games and supported me all the way. At the end of ...

Sri Lanka’s fortunes are on the rise despite limited success – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Photo source: CricketAddictor ( https://cricketaddictor.com/icc-t20-wc-2021/icc-t20-world-cup-2021-sri-lanka-announces-15-member-squad-for-the-tournament/ ) Sri Lanka’s attempt to resurrect its dying image as a force in international cricket hit a vital stumbling block when they squandered a chance to topple South Africa in the T20 World Cup in Sharjah. But all is not lost as a mostly inexperienced outfit showed grit in a last over disaster to warn the rest of the world that they are well on the way back to being respected and feared as they were during the reign of Arjuna Ranatunge, Sanath Jayasuriya, Aravinda De Silva, Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and Tillekeratne Dilshan and a few others who had them riding the crest of a wave during their time with the Island nation. Sliding down to the embarrassing depths of having to qualify for the Super 12’s, the Lankans romped ...
