Warner fails after two lives in rain shortened second day. – By TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.  (eLanka Sports editor) Australia limped to 106 for 2 off 47 overs when bad light followed by rain, brought a halt to the second day’s play which was subsequently abandoned.  David Warner playing his last Test,  survived two lives but was unable to capitalise on his good fortune to be snapped up at first slip for 34. A clearly disappointed Warner left the SCG to a standing ovation from the 30,000 plus crowd. His close buddy and opening partner for many years, Usman Khawaja figured in their 22nd 50 run partnership before Warner departed.   Khawaja who has had tremendous success at the SCG appeared set for a half century until Pakistan’s batting hero Aamir Jamal bowling with venom, forced him to edge one to the slips for a painstaking 47. Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith ...

South Australia’s Jordan Buckingham will replace Neser in the squad. NSP men’s Chair of Selectors, George Bailey said: “We’re taking a cautious approach with Michael, the elevated risk of potentially another large bowling load in the four-day PM XI’s fixture was deemed too high. “We know Michael is a quality player and we have seen him perform in the Test team and we want to ensure that should the opportunity arise to play more Test cricket this summer that we are giving him the best chance to be ready to perform. “Over the coming days we will work with the Brisbane Heat’s medical team to determine his Big Bash League availability.” ...

Lest We Forget: That Day at Lahore on 3rd March 2009 When Cricket was Assailed – by Michael Roberts “Test cricket returned to Lahore on Monday for the first time since a horrific attack in 2009 saw the venue … shunned by nations …,” says Peter Lalor in his article on the Lahore Test Match in today’s (22 March 2022) AUSTRALIAN newspaper. Lalor, perhaps deliberately (?,) avoids reference to the team that underwent this terrorist attack on 3rd March 2009: Sri Lanka.   He did not need to go far to seek the horrendous details about that attack. Ahsan Raza is umpiring the present match. He was reserve umpire for the Lahore match in March 2009 and received a bullet in his guts when the mini-van bearing officials was embraced in the terrorist assault. The mini-van driver was killed and this vehicle remained on the road as a sitting duck.** No one knows why the officials in the ...

One sided? Doubtful against untested Lankans – by Trevine Rodrigo (eLanka – Sports editor)   Doomsayers in Sri Lanka are bracing themselves for a whitewash by the Indians in the two Test series, but I have a gut feeling that the tourists will be no pushovers.  Dimuth Karunaratne leads a Sri Lankan  outfit unusually sitting at the top of World Test cricket championship rankings currently in it’s infancy.  The Lankans are a team looking for  resurgence and is stacked with a blend of youth and experience. But expert predictions strongly suggest they will be blown away by the powerful Indians led for the first time by Rohit Sharma.  Emotional attachment by Indian fans celebrating former skipper and cult hero Virat Kholi’s 100th Test may lift the home team and fend off any possible challenge.  India will be in the process of evolution under Sharma, axing several seasoned campaigners for new ...

Following a morning session that produced nine Sri Lankan wickets for just 91 runs, West Indies came up with a solid batting display after lunch, bringing the disparity to 135 runs for the loss of only Jermaine Blackwood’s wicket before the rain came. Sri Lanka off to robust start but Dimuth skips World Record – by Sunil Thenabadu (sports editor – eLanka) Chief Scores: Sri Lanka 113 for 1 wicket. in 34.4 overs Pathum Nissanak 61 * Dimuth Karunaratne 42  There was dissatisfaction and annoyance as skipper Dimuth Karunaratne unexploited out on the prospect of matching the World Record for most consecutive half-centuries in Test cricket by just eight runs yesterday, but Sri Lanka did well to reach 113 for one at stumps in a rain-curtailed day where only 34.4 overs were bowled. Rain had washed out the first two sessions of the Test match and play got underway only after tea with 45 overs scheduled but after 34.4 overs when  the umpires suspended play with 30 minutes left when the light faded. Dimuth had been in pretty good nick this year and he missed out on the milestone when he offered a return ...

Gamini Dissanayake: Superlative revelation of a supreme politician – By Sunil Thenabadu in Brisbane October 2021 is the great leaders 27th death anniversary As a young and energetic politician and the people’s representative in the Nuwara-Eliya district, Gamini Dissanayake extended yeoman service to all constituents with devotion, obligation and absolute dedication using his characteristic charismatic loom, irrespective of caste, creed and religion, despite of each person’s political affiliations. It would be tricky to find one more solitary politician in the archives of history of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, who was so vastly commended and held in sky-scraping esteem by his contemporaries and so cherished by his political opponents, predominantly due to his impartial and unbiased mind-set principally owed to his unprejudiced stance.  He was a unique and extraordinary politician who listened to the masses, solved their problems, and touched their lives in a very affirmative and compassionate ...
