Pakistan pace quartet stand between winning and losing their first T20 World Cup – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sport Editor)   Shaheen Shah Afridi leads a Pakistan pace quartet that can dismantle England’s batting line-up and their chances of snatching this edition of T20 World Cup.  England looked invincible against India,  chasing a par total. But they will be challenged if Pakistan wins the toss and invite them to have a first go with the bat.  Pakistan have a lethal pace combination that can destroy the best batting line-ups in the world, and a two paced MCG will give them the impetus to achieve just that  backed by serious options with spin. Pakistan’s batting has proved second to none.  Skipper Barbar Azam leads a talented line-up that can score freely on their day. The return of Afridi after missing tha Asia Cup, has given them that extra edge ...

India’s castle blown down by a mighty England huff and puff. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.     England huffed and puffed and blew India’s house down, much to the dismay of the ICC, the rest of all experts, and all expectations.  So, Asia in the form of Pakistan, take on England, and I would be a optimist to even venture on predicting a winner with two teams not really a popular choice who have made this World Cup final, and are capable of winning against anyone on their day.  Skipper Jos Buttler and Alex Hales smashed unbeaten 80 and 86 in whirlwind fashion to lead England on a romp to the final chasing 170. They achieved a par total with four overs to spare after an incredible run chase.  India provided the early fireworks led by prolific batters Virat Kohli 50 0ff40 balls, and Hardik Pandiya whose brutal ...

Sri Lanka crash out of T20 World Cup taking Australia with them – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. Sri Lanka flattered, then flopped, to exit the T20 World Cup with a bitter sweet taste in their mouth and the realisation that winning the Asia Cup and competing with the best in the world was two completely different leagues. Playing a game that was crucial to Australia’s chance to make the semi finals, Sri Lanka’s batting showed early promise then folded like a deck of cards as the middle order continued their dismal form with the bat to give England easy access to the semis.  Openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis started like a house on fire smashing the feared England attack for 39 runs off the first three and a half overs before England stemmed the tide by removing Mendis and the steady procession continued thereafter.  Nissanka, 67 with ...

Asia Cup and World Cup brings perspective to Sri Lanka. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE  Asia Cup and World Cup appear to be two world’s apart.  Ask Sri Lanka, they will confirm this in the affirmative.  Brimming with confidence and riding the crest of a wave since being crowned the champion of Asia, they were jolted into reality when unseeded Namibia brought them down to earth and reminded all in this unpredictable format, anything is possible.  A general outlook on the game suggests complacency,  and a given anticipation that made Sri Lanka perceive they were above what was before them. Namibia made a strong case to be considered as the next top rung representative at World cricket when they embarrassed a cock – a – hoop Sri Lanka who are expected to be a serious challenge to the best in the world.  Sri Lanka for their part,  are guilty ...

Brookes’ Book on Sri Lankan Cricket-by Nicholas Brookes Source:Thuppahis From Sathasivam to Sangakkara, Murali to Malinga, Sri Lanka can lay claim to some of the world’s most remarkable cricketers – larger-than-life characters, who thumbed convention and played the game their own way. More so than anywhere else in the world, Sri Lankan cricket has an identity. This is the land of pint-sized swashbuckling batsman, on-the-fly innovators and contorted, cryptic spinners. On the field of play, Victorian ideals of the past collide with madcap tropical hedonism to create something dizzying. Cricket is Sri Lanka, and Sri Lanka is cricket. We all know the story of the ’96 World Cup: how a team of unfancied amateurs rose from obscurity to top the world, doing so with such swagger that they changed the way the game was played. ...

What Sri Lanka must learn from their India thrashing – By Trevine Rodrigo (Melbourne: eLanka Sports Editor)   The old adage about catches winning matches couldn’t be better exemplified than by the butter-fingered Sri Lankan cricket team, who squandered at least a consolation win in Game 2 and were whitewashed by India. Dropped catches, sloppy fielding and questionable placement cost them the second game that would have been there for the taking with a smarter strategy. Fresh from a trouncing in Australia, the young Sri Lanka squad received a baptism of fire as they had to hurriedly readjust to Subcontinental conditions in a tight schedule that could be classified as unfair. The experience of handling bouncy wickets in Australia, which makes it difficult for the best batsmen in the world, definitely did not get better as the young Lankans took on the might of another lethal bowling attack in world ...

Sri Lanka need a different mindset to topple England march – By Trevine Rodrigo in Melbourne.    Sri Lanka need to learn from England’s demolition of Australia and adopt a strategy that is different, if they are to throw a spanner in the works and contain the frightening aspect of being batted out of the competition.  Australian reliance on proven pace was nullified to an embarrassing reality by the England batsmen who smashed them to all parts of the ground in what was the ultimate difference between two of the heavyweights of the competition.  Jos Butter proved to be the catalyst in the final outcome with a gem of an innings that ripped the heart out of the never say die Aussies. But it really boiled down to solid technique and super analysis of the conditions and wickets that saw the English superstar use his experience to make the feared Australian ...

Nostalgia of “brawl” of late Gamini “D” in conquering Test status by Sunil Thenabadu in Brisbane When Sri Lanka seized the World Cup from the Australians in the year 1996 they unequivocally proved to the whole World that the Sri Lankans were a power house in the cricketing world. The whole country was jubilant. Youth danced in delirious delight. The moment was ecstatic. Grateful as Sri Lankans usually are  many a mind recalled with joy and profound gratitude, inter alia, the one man who made the Sri Lankan dream a reality. In silent appreciation they remembered the name of Gamini Dissanayake. GD was born into a family of dignified lineage in Kandy. He qualified as a lawyer. Forsaking what would have been a lucrative legal practice he entered politics and soon was given the coveted position of Minister of Mahaveli Development. Having forsaken his lucrative legal career to pander to ...
