Music and its delights source:Island Amidst the many reports of gross corruption, discussions on loans from IMF, restructuring, inflation, and the rising rates of road accidents and homicides before sinking in a sea of troubles, I was delighted to be able to listen to the Rupavahinin musical programme of the great masters of Sinhala music like Neville, MS and CT Fernandos , TM Jayaratne, Chitra/Somapala, Milton Perera and others, at noon just before retiring to enjoy my siesta. The most recent to be aired was the music of a great composer and a competent pianist, Nimal Mendis(NM). Nimal has been providing music for several local films after returning from the UK where he had been working. Some of his songs like 1,Ran tikiri sina, 2.Ganga addara, 3.Viovee sansare, 4.Aney sir mage…,have won popular acclaim. Although the program manager wanted to get the comments of listeners via SMS I was not ...

Des Kelly – R.I.P –  by Roger Thiedeman Dear Neil, I was very sorry to hear this morning of the passing of Des Kelly. I count it a privilege, and a very timely one, to have spent an hour or so with Des at his place of residence only a couple of months ago. Although it was obvious that his physical health and mobility were compromised to varying degrees, he was still mentally as sharp as the proverbial tack, and completely ‘on form’ as far as his memory and wit were concerned. I am attaching a few photos you may care to include in a tribute to Des in eLanka Newsletter. The pics were taken by me in December 1990, during the first visit to Australia by Sri Lankan music superstar, now mentor and ‘guru’, Keerthi Pasquel. He was joined on that tour by Mariazelle Goonetilleke, also making her first trip ...

Rata Yana Grandmothers – By Capt Elmo Jayawardena Remember the bygone years! Daughters got married and became pregnant a few rounds more than the current rate. The average production line extended to a foursome. Some even went further, “A” team types and came close to two digit figures of adding new inhabitants to walk the planet. Today the story is different. “One is enough and he will get all we have,” is quite a common comment and a few over-step the planned reproduction limitations purely by accident and reach the second round. Either way the count is kept low relative to the statistics of the previous generations. Thank God. Let’s make a few comparisons, I do recall the yesteryear, same show, as common as grass blades. The drum major of a mother-in-law invaded and took over the whole show, lock stock and cradle. Of course she did not come alone ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – “Who am I” – by Charles Schokman From a biblical perspective, our identities and self-worth are rooted in the relationships we have with God, with our fellow humans, and with God’s creation. These relationships are not governed by the rules of competition but are governed by God’s justice, mercy, peace, and love. 1 Corinthians 6:17 — I am united with the Lord, and I am one with Him in spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 — I have been bought with a price, and I belong to God. 1 Corinthians 12:27 — I am a member of Christ’s body. Ephesians 1:3-8 — I have been chosen by God and adopted as His child. Our identity in Christ is a function of our relationship with Him. Knowing our authority and dominion in Christ Jesus makes us aware of whom we are in Him. Embracing the authority that is in Jesus reveals to us ...

LET THE DEAD BURY THEIR OWN – By Lakshman Navaratne Luke9:60, “Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” According to Apostolic Christianity:  66 books of Scripture is the stepping stone to Christianity. [A] This Stone is solid, unbreakable and the Apostolic Church; built on “Jesus”, shall be that Rock. Matthew 7:24, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: 25 and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock.” 39 books of the Old Testament are the history of the Nation of Hebrews. Since Jesus coming on earth, every phrase of the Old Testament was fulfilled in the last 27 books of the New Testament. ...

END OF AN ILLUSTRIOUS AND RICH CAREER – by Joe Van Langenberg It was with profound sorrow, that I learnt of the sad news of my good friend Desmond “Des” Kelly’s unexpected passing. My grief was palpable, raw, excruciating; rendering me speechless, given the fact it was only three days back, we spoke at length telephonically. And it was a tete-a tete embellished with his trademark humour and positive outlook on life. Des, as he was affectionately known to those privileged enough to have got up, close and personal with him, either on a personal or professional level, was one of the most likeable, and intelligent gentlemen ever. He became a very close friend of mine through our mutual love for music, which he happened to have an encyclopedic knowledge of, in addition to an eclectic taste for the same. Hence the enviable title of Mr Music. Des was additionally ...

Vale Mr Desmond Kelly (photos sent to eLanka by Trevine Rodrigo) It is with shock and deep sadness it was to Anne and I to be informed of the passing of our friend and father figure Des Kelly. In fact our families have all interacted with him and miss him dearly, after meeting him at our home when he visited often during the days he got around.  Our interaction with him began with a phone call to me around 15 years ago.  He wanted me to drop by for a conversation.  It was about wanting me to contribute stories the the Lanka Times which he was the Editor of.  Knowing of my commitment to another publication in Melbourne he put it subtly to me that he would be happy if I could forward stories not used in the other paper for the Lanka Times. That meeting with Anne and I ...
