“GOOD NEWS” (for a change) – by Des Kelly Thank you very much, Charles Schokman, for this most interesting collection of ‘Good-News’ stories. It is certainly high time we are blessed with stories such as these, because, as we all know, the news we do get, happens to be 90% BAD. So, for a while, my good readers of e’Lanka, let us forget about Wars, Missile launches, Rocket-men etcetera, and watch something that instils a little happiness and hope into our lives. Faith, Hope & Inspiration. – By Noor Rahim Almighty God sent into this mortal world the “Divine Message” of Goodness, Righteousness and Peace through Faith, Hope and Inspiration; and most importantly the Belief in “One God”. This “Message” was conveyed to the peoples through his designated/chosen “Messengers” at various successive periods of time on Mother Earth; to remind us mortals in the concept of “One Supreme God”. It so happens that the “Messages” and “Messengers of God” emanated from one focal point in History, in the Middle East; very soon to spread throughout the Universe and enveloping mankind regardless of caste, colour or creed. The Messages brought down from the Heavens by these “Messengers of the Almighty” were supreme, pristine and full of guidance for the Faithfull. Please read this inspiring little ‘post’ which will also provide some reminiscent memories of many who have already left us. God bless all Grandmas. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka.   GRANDMA’S APRON I don’t think our kids know what an apron is. The principle use of Grandma’s apron was to protect the dress underneath because she only had a few. It was wonderful for drying children’s tears, and on occasion was even used for cleaning ...

Vale’ Gavin Stevens – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Family, friends, Old Anthonians and ex-Havelocks and opposing Club players gathered to pay fond farewell to former Rugby great Gavin Stevens at the Wilson Chapel in Springvale. He also played Rugby for Outstation schools against the Colombo schools for St. Anthony’s Katugastota. He was a gentle giant of the Rugby scene in Sri Lanka representing Kandy Rugby Football Club before moving to Colombo where he pulled on the Havelocks jumper with distinction. Among former team ...

From Sri Lanka to Maningrida Originally from Sri Lanka, Hemantha and Manjula have now seen more of Australia than most Australians, thanks to the work they’ve done with Outback Stores since 2016. With Hemantha’s tertiary education in hospitality management and Manjula’s retail experience, they found they had a perfect combination of skills to work as remote store managers. They first started as casual employees at Timber Creek (NT) and Warmun Roadhouse (WA) before being offered permanent positions as Takeaway Managers at the new store at Balgo, a community of around 300 people belonging to the Kukatja tribe, on the edge of the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia. “We got to know most of the families, experienced lots of cultural events and the elders taught us a lot,” says Hemantha. As occasional relief managers during their time at Balgo they had the chance to also visit Beagle Bay, One Arm ...
