SUNDAY CHOICE  – YIELD NOT TO TEMPTATION  – by Charles Schokman As I write this devotion, I remember my inadequacies. This is indeed humbling. I cannot become self-righteous or arrogant knowing that we all face life’s temptations. What tempts me may not tempt you. Nevertheless, rest assured we are all tempted. Our temptations come in a variety of forms, which is why we cannot judge or criticize someone else. By the grace of God, we could have fallen into the hands of temptation. God’s power saves us. Temptations are a part of life. We just cannot yield to it. Let me be clear. I am not simply talking about sexual temptations. I am talking about temptations of all kinds including greed and dishonesty. The list is too long to name. Rather, let us look at the scripture reference found in Luke 22:40. “There He told them, ‘Pray that you will not give ...

Ceylon Cricket Team 1958 – Yes it was truly a Ceylonese Team! – By Charles Schokman Source: Sent to eLanka by Charles Schokman This photo popped up in the social media. This was the then All Ceylon team picked to play an Unofficial test match  against the  English team led by Colin Cowdrey in 1958.  An interesting aspect I noted was the  balanced ethnic diversity of Sinhalese, Moors, Malay, Tamil, Burgher in this team. Sadly, we don’t find it now.  Only three are among the living – Chandra Schaffter (94 years) Dr H.I.K. Fernando (91 years) and Michael Tissera (85 years). Don’t confuse A.C.M. Lafir with Billiards Lafir (MJM). ACM Lafir was the opening batsman for St Anthony’s College, Katugostota and was chosen on his outstanding batting record for the club that he played in Colombo – Saracens owned by Macan Markar family. Lafir received the award for the  highest runs ...

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CEYLONESE – By Jayam Rutnam I was weened on LACTOGEN powdered milk when I was a baby.  I was also given WOODWARDS GRIPE WATER. Now I am in my teens.   Woke up this morning, I was sleeping on a mattress made by ARPICO.  I listened to Reddifusion, because my GRUNDIG radio was broken.  Washed my face with RANI SANDALWOOD SOAP.   The servants wash in SUNLIGHT SOAP.  Brushed my teeth with PEPSODENT.   Put BRYLCREAM and combed my hair.  I put a dab of CUTICURA powder on my face.  I put on my VELONA banian.   I wore my HENTLY shirt since my MANHATTEN shirt  was being dry cleaned at SITLANIS as BURTOLS was closed for the day. I put on my BATA shoes.   I walked through the hall which was being polished with CARDINAL POLISH.  I then had a breakfast of toast with CHIVERS MARMALADE JAM and another ...

SUNDAY CHOICE – Count all your Blessings instead – By Charles Schokman 1.Give thanks. Once a day take quiet time to feel gratitude for what you have, not impatience for what you don’t have. This alone will bring you halfway to happiness. We already have most of the ingredients of a happy life. It’s just that we tend to take these for granted and focus on unmet wants, unfulfilled desires. Giving thanks is better than shopping – and cheaper too. 2. Praise. Catch someone doing something right and say so. Most people, most of the time, are unappreciated. Being recognised, thanked and congratulated by someone else is one of the most empowering things that can happen to us. So don’t wait for someone to do it for you: do it for someone else. You will make their day, and that will help to make yours. Image Source : quotefancy 3. Spend time with ...

An Inspirational Message for the Month of July 2024 – By Charles Schokman Image Source : biblepic What is meant by “sufficient grace”? ‘My grace is sufficient for you. Grace is “undeserved favour.” The grace of God is His granting of good things to those who only deserve punishment. The word sufficient means “adequate” or “enough.” Sufficient grace speaks of the grace of God that grants salvation, preservation, and everything else that the believer needs in this life and in the life to come. Sufficient grace is not a biblical term but rather a technical description of the grace of God as revealed in Scripture. The only time the two words are used together in Scripture is in 2 Corinthians 12:9. Paul had some form of physical affliction that caused him real difficulty. No doubt he thought he would be able to serve the Lord more effectively if he did not have this physical ailment to slow him down. He ...

SUNDAY CHOICE: What does it mean “In Christ Alone”? – By Charles Schokman Being in Christ alone means we sacrifice self to submit entirely to Him, and we expel anything from our lives that make us put our hope and faith elsewhere. St Paul had this to say- (1 Corinthians 15:1) “Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, In Christ alone!” Our Hope in Christ Alone is further expounded in Psalm 62. “1 For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.  2 He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.  3 How long will all of you attack a man, to batter him, like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?  4 They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly, they curse.  5 For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is ...

The English Language – a bit of poetry -By Charles Schokman Sounds complicated, but we learnt it all We’ll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes, But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes; One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese, Yet the plural of moose should never be meese; You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice, Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice. If the plural of man is always called men, Why shouldn’t the plural of pan be called pen ? If I speak of my foot and show you my feet, And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet ? If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, Why shouldn’t the plural of booth be called beeth ?  Then one may be that, & three would be ...
