Holy Family Convent Dehiwala – Annual Dinner Dance at the Grand on Princes, Melbourne – Photos thanks to Trevine Rodrigo Holy Family Convent Dehiwala put on a spectacular show at their annual dinner dance at the Grand on Princes. Meticulous organisation and a well coordinated celebration of another year of fund raising for the underprivileged in Sri Lanka, delivered a great response from Melbourne’s dance goers. President of the Old Girls Association in Melbourne, Diane Gonzalves outlined the tremendous efforts the committee this year, and the years past, have generated to send assistance to school children in Sri Lanka who are struggling with the effects of economic hardship that has enveloped many parts of the country. Esric Jackson, Mali Jay, and the Vardon brothers Angelo and Jordan and No Limit excelled with a superb selection of music. The Grand on Princes added the icing on the cake with a sumptuous ...

Springvale RSL – all things entertainment and cuisine with a Sri Lankan touch thanks to the culinary expertise of Chef John Fernando – by Trevine Rodrigo (Melbourne – eLanka) Springvale RSL has taken a keen interest in all things entertainment and cuisine with a Sri Lankan touch thanks to the culinary expertise of Chef John Fernando. A memorable night of entertainment provided by Ebony and a feast of Sri Lankan and international food on an endless smorgasbord made it a tantalising experience allround. An international crowd enjoyed a sold out event at a very reasonable price that would never be repeated for its abundance. Good music, great food and wonderful company, made the night complete. Valentine’s day at the Grand on Princes – By Trevine Rodrigo It was a night about, love, loving that special one, and music that creates the mood. Valentine’s day at the Grand on Princes delivered just that as Corrine Almeida and Ebony and Stan Azzopardi with Stex, comprising Lex Pirotta and Denis Bugat belted out some fantastic songs to suit the occasion. Esric Jackson joined the celebration with his own rendition of Country favourites that has been his trademark over many decades. Corrine was in scintillating form as the veteran of Sri Lanka music showcased why she has been on top of her game over a long successful journey in music. Personally, Valentine’s day should be every day, if you love someone. That’s my personal perspective. But the special day dedicated to it, (February 14) each year brings out the romantic in most couples and also delivers a reason for ...

Manu Ranga Dancing Concert by Manuki Ranga Dancing School – photos thanks to Roy Grafix View the full photo album on eLanka Facebook page On the 4th of December Manuki Ranga Dancing School brought Manu Ranga to stage. Manu Ranga was our first concert as a class and commemorates our 10th anniversary as one of Sydney’s traditional Sri Lankan dancing schools. We were so incredibly lucky that whilst this was our first concert as such, that it was completely sold out.  Manu Ranga was a result and product of over 6 months’ work of hard work, preparation and care from our students, parents, committee and most importantly our teacher Ishara. On the night we performed over 20 items as a school and were able to bring to the stage a diverse range of acts which showcased all forms and styles of dance in Sri Lanka. It was a wonderful night ...

Super performance by Annesley Malawana and the Super Chimes at the Lions Club spectacular – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE It’s been many decades since the Super Golden Chimes dominated the Sri Lanka music scene with folk and Pop music that has traversed the generations. The ultimate at the time for traditional favourites, that music has lived on thanks to one of its original members, Annesley Malawana, who continues to keep these Golden memories alive. Annesley and his own set up, the Super Chimes, came, saw, and conquered Australia with their breathtaking reproductions of that famous band from way back when, and are about to depart after sell out performances around Australia. I had a brief chat with one of Sri Lanka’s icons and he assured me that the hunger to go on has not waned in the least. Not mainly because of the infectious clamour and following they get. ...
