Trevine Rodrigo (eLanka – Melbourne) Catches up with Corrine Almeida It was an absolute pleasure catching up with top notch female vocalist and icon, Corrine Almeida, at our place for an overdue chat and dinner. She’s a breath of fresh air and our quiet meet up was one of reminiscing and health advice from a proven Yoga enthusiast. Corrine is here from Sri Lanka for two gigs, and judging by the sell out crowd at the Springvale Town Hall last week, the next one promises a similar outcome. She is a gifted entertainer. Corrine has been a huge draw in Australia and around the globe much like legendary Desmond De Silva, and her interaction with her fans has little parallel. She spoke with humility about how glad she was to be blessed with a faithful following, many who never fail to show up wherever she performs. She points out that ...

Pathirana and Theeksheena lay the platform for a sensational Sri Lanka triumph over Bangladesh – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. (Elanka Sports Editor) If early indications count for anything, Sri Lanka showed pride and poise of it’s symbolic Lion as they cruised past Bangladesh with a clinical five- wicket victory at Pallekelle. Hamstrung with a number of injuries, and perhaps resting some players for the upcoming World Cup, Sri Lanka showed some promise with available stocks, particularly Matheesha Pathirana who teamed up with Maheesh Theeksheena to rip through a respected Bangladesh batting line-up and bowl them out for 164 in 42.4 overs making the task for the batters a relatively easy task . Sri Lanka strolled to the target in 39 overs losing five wickets thanks to fighting knocks from Sadeera Samarawickrema 54 off 77 balls, and Charith Asalanka 62 off 92 balls after a top order stutter. Sri Lanka’s ...

Injury ridden Sri Lanka’s gamble on sacrifice in Asia Cup with plans for World Cup is up fordebate? – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. (Elanka Sports Editor) Sri Lanka go into today’s Asia Cup game against Bangladesh with no illusions of the task ahead. Understrength in bowling, and the omission of experience, perhaps for long term plans, the Lankans risk of performing well in this tournament seems bleak. It does have some merit though,  for uncovering depth from a different perspective for the bigger event, as long as the end result is not disastrous.  With the World Cup around the corner, Sri Lanka needs to be aware of the consequences of an overcautious plan that will backfire if they perform poorly in Asia. Momentum counts for everything when the All important World Cup is ahead, so careful strategy will determine whether the Asia Cup and World Cup preparations are on track for ...

The Rain in Spain were tears of joy as they snatch a World Cup dream- BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) It was raining tears of joy in Spain as the plucky Spanish pulled off a sensational 1-0 win over a luckless England to lift the World Cup in Sydney. In all fairness, England were fancied to go all the way but found the Spanish women a daunting prospect. It was all Spain for most parts of the game as they launched endless waves of attacks into England territory but were thwarted by a solid defence that could have made the margin more emphatic. A magnificent strike from Olga Carmona in the 29th minute which whizzed into the right corner of the net was the difference in a tightly contested game. England missed what seemed like a gettable equaliser in front of the Spanish goal. But it was ...

A burst bubble and skilful Sweden push the Matildas to fourth – By TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (Elanka Sports Editor) The English burst their bubble 2-1,  but the Matildas although deflated were on a high in the Semi-Final after an arm wrestle against their arch rivals, and it breathed belief that they would clinch third place in the World Cup.  A flamboyant Sweden decided otherwise,  as they stifled and snuffed out home crowd support to claim third place despite the deafening home crowd support with a truly calculated 2-0 win. I was one, among a few million Australians, who firmly believed the Matildas would end on a high after their heartbreaking loss to England.  But it was not to be,  as one of Soccer’s World Cup heavyweights showed skill, flair, and deadly accuracy to kill off any chance of an upset.  While the Matildas fourth place was irrelevant to the ...

Ruthless England break Matildas hearts – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE  (eLanka Sports Editor) England were unsympathetic yet professionally switched on as they mercilessly destroyed a Matildas dream to advance to the World World Cup final.  The European Champions were clinical yet ruffled by a spirited home team that gave them a few shivers before pulling away in the last 20 minutes to scramble home 3-1 in an entertaining semi final that at times looked like it could go down to the wire. The Matildas had their chances of making the outcome different,  but England rose to and countered every challenge with forays of their own that was worthy of their eventual dominance and victory.  England lacked the skills of Denmark and France but adopted a cat and mouse strategy against a dangerous underdog, playing with new found confidence and overwhelming home crowd support.  England played with the dominant spirit ...

Matildas shock France to storm into World Cup semi final – By Trevine Rodrigo (eLanka Sports editor – Melbourne) The stakes were high, and the spotlight was on a home team daring to dream, and when it’s Australia, nothing seems be beyond achievable. And accordingly, the Matildas put Australia on the world map as a team not to be underestimated. In true fashion, Australia withstood and overcame a clearly overskilled France to snatch a history making semi final of the Women’s World Cup after an exhausting 7-6 penalty shoot out which broke a stalemate through normal time, extra time and the final decider. Titanic would best describe the fantastic tussel for a semi final berth, and Australia and France provided just that in an epic quarter final of the Women’s World Cup in front of a mammoth crowd in Brisbane. In a frenetic game that ebbed and flowed with no ...

The Annual Dinner Dance of St. Paul’s Waragoda, Kelaniya – Photos thanks to Trevine Rodrigo (Melbourne) It turned out to be a great night at the annual dinner dance of St. Paul’s Waragoda, Kelaniya complemented by fine food, great music and a few happy “Vegemites” who took home prizes from the entrance ticket and raffle ticket draws. Ruwanal Senewiratne, who heads this project in aid of his old school, detailed the benefits of the funds raised which is channelled to the school for scholarships for children which covers their education all the way to year 12. He thanked Esric Jackson, Bertie and Frank Ekanaike and the patrons who rallied around him and partner Philomena to make it another success. This year, like those previous, drew a reasonable crowd of friends and past pupils and the fabulous music provided by No Limit and guest singers Esric Jackson and Rob Foenander gave ...

Australia underlined their intentions at the Women’s World Cup Soccer with an empathetic 2-0 win over a skilful Denmark to advance to the quarter final – by Trevine Rodrigo (eLanka Sports editor – Melbourne) Despite being down 0-1 after a brilliant goal by Caitlan Foord in the first half, Denmark displayed superior skill and went to the sheds at the break promising a titanic tussel. Sadly it was not to be as the Aussies took control and a second goal to Raso half way in the second half, sank the Danish hopes to ensure victory. The Aussies at this stage look ominous, and with skipper Sam Kerr playing the final 13 minutes, her first minutes in the World Cup since returning from injury, will be a dangerous contender to shock this edition of the World Cup. The shock loss to Nigeria seems like a distant blip right now and the ...

Pumped up Sri Lanka burst Dutch bubble. Shanaka’s men annihilate Netherlands in emphatic fashion in qualifying final. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Dasun Shanaka and Sri Lanka basked in the glory of a complete whitewash of the qualifiers with a comprehensive thrashing of the Netherlands in the final at Harare.  The Sri Lankans showed remarkable fight when their backs were against the wall as the went on to remain unbeaten and throwing out a warning that they are up for the fight against the best.   Maheesh Theeksheena and Dilshan Madushanka ensured that Sri Lanka’s modest total of 233 all out in 47.5 overs was defendable, when they routed the Dutch for 105 in only 23.3 overs making the decider a cakewalk.  Theeksheena followed his four wicket haul against Zimbabwe with another similar effort and Madushanka grabbed another three and with Wanindu Hasarsnga De Silva two more to his remarkable ...
