India emerge as raging favourites for World Cup. But are they peaking too early? – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE. (eLanka Sports editor)   India and Australia have parallel thinking before a World Cup in that they utilise a similar strategy to work out potentially dangerous opponents by placing a series between them before the real event.  We have seen this time and time again. And this edition of the World Cup in India sees two definite contenders go head to head with this in mind before the World Cup proper.  The cat and mouse strategy is meant to fine tune the strengths and weaknesses between the squads with the ultimate aim to outhink their opponents in the decider if they meet. Both teams loom large to take out this edition. But write off Pakistan, England, New Zealand and South Africa at your peril.  India take momentum and home ground ...

Sri Lanka selectors make calculated risk on an improving squad much in line for their unorthodox game plan – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (Elanka Sports Editor) Sanity has finally prevailed as Sri Lanka’s cricket selectors boldly shunned and thumbed their noses at the call for Skipper Dasun Shanaka’s sacking and stuck with a recently proven outfit for the World Cup in India. Yes,  ramifications could be diabolical if the plan backfires, but it does make sense to stick with an outfit that has jelled in a way.  Fourteen wins from 16 games is no mean feat although expert commentators claim that most of those wins were against ‘minnows ‘. That term has little relevance and no place in cricketing parlance anymore. This World Cup will reveal that.  Informed sources say that Shanaka was given the choice of resigning and accepted it. But in true Sri Lankan fashion, a flurry ...

Sriraj and India scuttle hapless Sri Lanka to grab Asia Cup – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (Elanka Sports Editor) Sri Lanka went from heroes to zero in just over 15 overs as India gave them a thrashing in the Asia Cup final they can Never forget.  Just days after relegating world number one ranked Pakistan to the sidelines in a heart stopper, Sri Lanka just rolled over and let themselves be humiliated in front of a packed home crowd, and an entire population, losing without a whimper.  Excuses about winning the toss in overcast conditions and electing to bat does little to convince me that there is more to it than meets the eye. It would be vindicated if they were without a coaching staff who do not give advice on these matters before the toss. Yes, India were favourites to win it with a highly skilled and far ...

Dinuth Wellelage announces his entry to the big time in fruitless performance against India – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports Editor) Cricketing prodigy Dinuth Wellelage was a Lone Ranger in Sri Lanka’s fruitless effort to upset economic heroes India,  as the home team showed spark with the ball, then slumped to a competitive 41- run defeat in Colombo. The Lankans first loss, after a record breaking 13 consecutive wins, clouded what could have been a memorable upset if the batsmen acknowledged a stirling performance by an undermanned Sri Lanka attack who found two unlikely heroes.  Dinuth Wellelage and Charith Asalanka combined to bamboozle a strong Indian batting line-up restrict them to 213 all our in 49.1 overs. That was another unusual record the Lankans established in 14 games, bowling the opposition out in this format.  But it was Wellelage who announced himself to the big time, grabbing 5 ...

Sri Lanka dare to dream with comfortable win over Bangladesh – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (Elanka Sports Editor) Sadeera Samarawickrema smashed a whirlwind 93 off 72 balls with 2 sixers and 7 fours to steer Sri Lanka to a 23 run victory over Bangladesh. The rising star in Sri Lanka’s batting line-up looks to be fine tuning his craft in preparation for the Cricket World Cup in India next month.  The win gives Sri Lanka vital points before facing Asian giants India and Pakistan and the hope of creating an upset to make it to the final.  India and Pakistan have upto now had limited preparation due to inclement weather in Sri Lanka and may just be a little underdone for the crucial final stages of the tournament.  Sadeera’s heroics and Kusal Mendis 50  off 73 and and Pathum Nissanka 40 off 50 helped bolster Sri Lanka to a ...

Sri Lanka scramble into Asia Cup super fours but skipper Shanaka’s form slump is concerning.  – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.  (Elanka Sports Editor) Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka finds himself in a serious predicament unless he is able to extricate himself from a form slump that questions his place in the team, albeit in winning form. Shanaka’s return from the last few games have been mediocre to say the least, but his leadership qualities appear to have saved him so far. How long that prevails will be dependant on the next games in the Asia Cup. His axing at this stage,  with the World Cup in India just around the corner, will not be an ideal scenario. Whether the team will gel under a different leader in the World Cup will be closely scrutinised by the country’s cricket administrators. Either way he can take the pressure off himself with ...

Triumphant Sri Lanka grab a piece of history with first ever emphatic series win over England. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE  (Elanka Sports Editor) Sri Lanka’s women continued a rampant run as they shocked England and threw down the gauntlet to the men’s team currently in the top four in the Asia Cup, that nothing is unsurmountable. Chamari Athapaththu’s ladies swept past England to claim a historic series  2-1 win and announced themselves as big time competitors against anyone.  Beating England in England makes this triumph even more special and goes down as the best effort yet by the rapidly rising Lankans who under new coach Rumesh Ratnayake are making giant strides.  From a team mostly dependent on Skipper Athapaththu, and perhaps a couple of handy allrounders, a different mindset has breathed belief into the group as they now perform as a perfect fighting unit. Yes, they rode on ...

Sri Lanka’s women shock England and Athapaththu questions BBL indifference – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE  (Elanka Sports Editor) Sri Lanka’s women have set the stage for their counterparts to follow with a shock win over England, ending a ten year drought against one of the powerhouses. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu led the chase for a gettable target after Sri Lanka’s bowlers stifled the strong England batting line-up to 104, with a memorable performance that will be long remembered.  What has been heartening is the sudden upsurge of the team since Rumesh Ratnayake took over as head coach. They have taken the scalps of New Zealand and now England which has been for a long while, a bridge too far. Now the World game wii be wary of the plucky Lankans who have let the others sit up and take notice. Their allround skills appear to have lifted way beyond anything ...
