Esric Jackson…..Sri Lanka’s and Melbourne’s ‘comeback kid’- BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE Strength, resilience and a God given talent is what personifes Esric Jackson, one of Sri Lanka’s outstanding vocal talent over several decades. And there’s no sign of his love for entertainment and being in the thick of it waning. Not in the near future anyway. His sojourn into music began at tender age in the ancient city of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, where a promising musical career was dramatically interrupted and forced into a U turn. Trying to help a stranded Colombo band to raise enough money to buy them return transport home, he related in a Television interview with Noeline Honter, on Channel 31 in Melbourne, how he got into hot water with local politicians. “I felt sorry for the guys when I found out their plight which made at least one of them reach the point of ...

Ton happy Sri Lanka reduce Ireland to first Test horror – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Four centuries, and timely form reversal piloted Sri Lanka to a convincing innings win against Ireland in the first Test, giving the home team some welcome recuperation after a painful and forgettable tour to New Zealand.  Bullied and humiliated by a half strength Kiwi side in all formats, Sri Lanka returned home to let the visiting Irish know what it feels like to be at the receiving end of superior opposition.  Sri Lanka’s batting dilemmas were firmly put behind them for once, and with spinning sensation Prabath Jayasuriya and Vishwa Fernando exploiting the treacherous track, they bamboozled the Irish batting to win in a canter as the tourists plummeted to a embarrassing innings defeat.  Ireland,  on their maiden Test tour to the Island, were smashed to all parts of the Galle ...

The Saints of Nugegoda annual dinner dance – By Trevine Rodrigo The Saints of Nugegoda annual dinner dance has established itself as an important day in the calendar of Melbourne’s social events. This year was no different as the Grand on Princes reverberated to the fantastic sounds of Replay 6 and No Limit, and the immense popularity of these gifted musical set ups obviously resulted in a sold out event. Old boys and girls of St. Joseph’s and St. John’s combined once more to make it an enjoyable night for themselves and their friends. Bertie Ekanaike thanked the sellout crowd for their continued patronage of the event while recalling it’s origins with Andre Ephraums who was sadly snatched away in his prime. Bertie and Andre’s brother Jerome were given instruction that the dance was to continue immaterial of the financial benefit, by Andre, a pledge they vow to keep. Bertie ...

Sri Lanka eclipsed in pulsating thriller. New Zealand complete clean sweep – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Beaten but unbowed, Sri Lanka engaged New Zealand in an epic decider which ended in a heart stopping Kiwi win with a ball to spare. The Islanders left New Zealand shores with a semblance of their reputation restored. After a torrid tour in the Tests and one-dayers, the Lankans redeemed some pride going down 2-1 but after a much better effort where the home team had to work hard for their success. New Zealand had a clean sweep in all formats indicating their steady rise in the world rankings and the revelation there is no lack of talent in both batting and bowling as some regulars were missing making big money in the IPL. A final analysis will suggest the Lankans were comprehensively outclassed by a stronger opponent. The Queenstown ...

Even Stevens at 39th Joe- Pete in Melbourne but Joe’s claim bragging rights.- BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports Editor   It was Even Stevens at the 39th annual Josephian- Peterite cricket encounter in Melbourne but the Joe’s will claim bragging rights for their important win in the over 40’s game. The Peterites easily accounted for the Josephians in the open age game played early in the morning but the Joe’s stormed back to level things in the over 40’s game which followed, as a carnival like atmosphere prevailed at the Endeavour Hills Cricket Club ground.  As is the norm when they compete, great camaraderie prevailed between the the rival schools and their families present. It also coincides with the real encounter in Sri Lanka where the real rivalry is played out around now, back home. The day’s entertainment included live music and plenty of food and drinks as ...

Lacklustre batting send Lankans hurtling to another thrashing – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports Editor) One more batting collapse and a familiar scenario re-emerged putting Sri Lanka back to where they belonged, as the Kiwis bounced back to hand out a nine wicket thrashing to the struggling tourists while levelling the T20 series. Buoyed by their first win on tour,  Sri Lanka went in with renewed confidence but were rudely awoken the reality that the Kiwis are not easy beats at home. They carved up New Zealand’s attack in the first game. But New Zealand’s superior strategy of leading the attack with Adam Milne was testament of their bowling depth. And, Sri Lanka found another weapon they couldn’t defend against. Milne cut a swathe through a now established Sri Lankan inconsistent batting line-up to pick up 5 wickets for only 26 runss from his four overs, and with ...

Charith Asalanka and Kusal Janith Perera steer Sri Lanka to a nail biting win – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Charith Asalanka found timely form, and Kusal Janith Perera made a welcome return to Sri Lanka’s fold to steer the tourists to their first win on tour against New Zealand after a nail biting finish in the first T20. It raised slim hopes of something for the tourists to celebrate after a torturous run in the Tests and one-dayers. Eden Gardens,  the garden of pain, for once relented to a Charith Asalanka Super Over assault that gave the Sri Lankans an unexpected escape from a  tour best forgotten,  handing them what appeared an unlikely win,  and a bit of pain for the cock-a-hoop Kiwis.  But victory was not on a platter as the Lankans posted an imposing target of 196 on a wicket renowned for pace and ...

Sri Lanka’s downward spiral continues unabated – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) Sri Lanka is continuing to prove they have no game plan for the one day format anymore as their batters struggle to cope with New Zealand’s bowlers in seaming conditions. With the Cricket World Cup fast approaching, it is concerning if Sri Lanka will fail to qualify to the top tier for the first time in a long time having to get through the qualifiers with the lesser nations. Winning in 1996 under Arjuna Ranatunge and making two finals thereafter, has made this country a mainstay in World Cup history and it would be sad indeed if they are unable to make it to the top. Their downward spiral towards the cellar of the world game is disturbing and downright embarrassing to their fans and team management as they stumble from one defeat to another ...

Sheep to the slaughterhouse in Auckland – Sri Lanka surrender in the house of pain – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports editor) The Test series was a disaster, so Sri Lanka changed focus and sought solace and new direction from the one day series. But that dream of a reversal of fortunes quickly dissipated to horror as New Zealand thrashed the hapless Lankans in the first one-dayer at the garden of pain in Auckland. Known over the ages for being a venue where the Kiwis are unstoppable, mainly in Rugby Union,  the Lankans were quickly reminded about this statistic as New Zealand’s batters and bowlers ran riot to complete an embarrassing demolition of the visiting Islanders. Dasun Shanaka and his team will reflect on a lack of proper preparation and planning of the tour where most of the squad were given insufficient time to acclimatise and work out ...
