SRI LANKA NEWS (APRIL 2022) Compiled by Victor Melder President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has issued the Extraordinary Gazette declaring a public emergency in Sri Lanka with effect from April 01, 2022. The Gazette has been issued considering the prevailing situation in the country and in the interests of public security, the protection of public order and the maintenance of supplies and services essential to the life of the community. President Gotabaya has issued the Gazette under the powers vested in him by Section 2 of the Public Security Ordinance (Chapter 40), as amended by Act. No. 8 of 1959. Law No. 6 of 1978 and Act, No.28 of 1988.                   SRI LANKA NEWS (MARCH 2022) Compiled by Victor Melder Sri Lanka’s inflation, as measured by the change in the Colombo Consumers’ Price Index (CCPI) increased to 15.1 percent in February 2022 from 14.2 percent in January 2022, the Department of Census and Statistics reported Monday. The CCPI for all items for the month of February 2022 increased to 160.1 from 158.4 in January 2022. The Year on Year inflation of Food Group increased to 25.7 percent in February 2021 from 25.0 percent in January 2022 and the Year on Year inflation of Non Food Group increased to 10.1 percent in February 2021 from 9.2 percent in the previous month. For the month of February 2021, on year‐to‐year basis, contribution to inflation by food commodities was 8.23 percent and the contribution of Non Food items was 6.85 percent. SRI LANKA CRICKET NEWS (NOVEMBER 2021) Compiled by Victor Melder Sri Lanka’s new cricket superstar Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva said his first T20 World Cup will be one of his most memorable feats in history as he finished the championship with 16 wickets that included the three qualifying round matches although his team failed to qualify for the semi finals. In the Super 12s Hasaranga took 10 wickets while Australia’s Adam Zampa took 11.    SRI LANKA NEWS (NOVEMBER 2021) Compiled by Victor Melder According to Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry, 626 new COVID-19 cases were reported so far on Sunday. According to the Epidemiology Unit report at 8:30 pm Sunday, a total of 545,088 COVID-19 cases have been reported since the inception of the pandemic. While 16,049 infected patients are currently under medical care at hospitals and homes, 515,183 patients have fully recovered and been discharged from hospitals. Sri Lanka Sunday reported 15 deaths raising the total to 13,856. According to the Epidemiology Unit report, so far total of 15,796,673 people have received a first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 13,577,829 have received the second dose. In addition, 54,031 have received the third booster dose. SRI LANKA CRICKET NEWS (OCTOBER 2021) Compiled by Victor Melder Minod Bhanuka, Ramesh Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Lakshan Sandakan and Ashen Bandara have been added to Sri Lanka’s original squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup – announced mid-September. Lahiru Madhushanka, who was named in the original squad will not travel with the team as he is recovering from an injury. Reserve-keeper Minod Bhanuka and the two batsmen – Ramesh Mendis and Pathum Nissanka – were part of Sri Lanka’s recent home series defeat to South Africa in August. They came away with underwhelming performances and were omitted from the initial squad.
