Relics of an era- BY MAHIL WIJESINGHE The Panavitiya Ambalama on four solid rock stones planted on the ground Source:Sundayobserver ‘Ambalama’ is a Sinhala word for a wayside rest-house. I first saw one when I was trekking to Sri Pada, (Adam’s Peak) with my grandmother in the latter part of the 1970s. I saw several buildings along the trek up to the peak where weary pilgrims stop over to take a respite from their long journey. Back in those days, pilgrimages and carters’ travels lasted weeks or even months. These long journeys were often by foot or by cart. Each carried his or her provisions and stopped for rest at Ambalamas constructed and designed as architecturally simple buildings for providing shelter to weary travellers free. It was also a place where travellers can rest, eat, wash and possibly stay overnight. Ambalama is closely linked with Sri Lankan culture and embedded ...

Serene heights-BY MAHIL WIJESINGHE Outside view of the cave Source:Sundayobserver There is so much to see, sense and hear of the mountain of Batatota where the mythical cave called Diwaguhawa is encased in thick jungle, on the slopes of Adam’s Peak Tea pluckers busily walk among the bushes in tea estates in the undulating mountain ranges. These mountain ranges stretch as far as eye can see. The Adam’s Peak or Sri Pada rises abruptly through the lower mountain ranges. The cool cascading streams flow through valleys. Mist and clouds cover the summits of the valleys. The sleepy village called Erathna, a mountainous hamlet close to Kuruwita, is enriched with natural beauty and wilderness. The village is on the mountain range of Adam’s Peak. One of the arduous routes to Adam’s Peak commences from Erathna. It leads to the summit through extreme wilderness and is most adventurous. Most young pilgrims to ...

Wonder of wood carvings-by TEXT & PIX BY MAHIL WIJESINGHE The Panavitiya Ambalama stands on four solid rock stones planted on the ground at Matiyagane Source:Sundayobserver Ambalama’ is a Sinhala word for a wayside rest-house. I first saw one when I was trekking to Sri Pada, (Adam’s Peak) as a boy with my grandmother in latter part of 1970s. I saw several buildings along the trek up to the peak where weary pilgrims stop over to take a respite from their long journey. Ambalama was closely associated with the culture of Sri Lankan community. It was also a great necessity, which was embedded in their day-to-day life. On a long haul journey, people pull over at roadside hotels and rest houses to freshen up and have some tea. Those days, the weary travellers needed a place of refuge as they traversed various footpaths, which through long stretches of fields and ...

Ampitiya Seminary: In the serene hills overlooking the Dumbara valley     Source:-sundayobserver December is a holiday month for schoolchildren when many office workers also take their yearend holidays. However, the deadly Covid-19 pandemic has put an end to all this not only in Sri Lanka but around the world this Christmas season. The pilgrim trek to Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak) also begins this month and goes on till April. I recall a journey to Kandy during Christmas days somewhere in the early 1980s when I was an ardent reader and contributor to the now defunct Kalpana , a monthly Sinhala magazine popular among the Sinhala readers. The editor of the magazine, Gunadasa Liyanage did a fantastic cover story on the Ampitiya Seminary in Kandy in December, 1983, with a colourful cover picture of the building photographed on a cool mist-laden morning. Having seen the magazine, I nursed an ambition ...
