Discovering Sigiriya: Jonathan Forbes’ Enterprise-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis Avishka Mario Senewiratne, whose chosen title is “Jonathan Forbes and the Discovery of Sigiriya,” where it was presented in The Ceylankan, vol 26/3, August 2023 “Sigiri is the only example in Ceylon of those solitary activities, which form so remarkable a feature in the table-land of the dakka…” – Sir James Emerson Tennent Surrounded by the glorious forestry, guarded by majestic ramparts, nourished by enchanting tanks and ponds, and illuminated by those picturesque frescoes, the Lion Rock: Sigiriya is certainly a grand delight in this palm-fringed isle. Its histories and mysteries are vast. For nearly 700 years this one-time Capital of ancient Ceylon, which housed the fortress of the infamous King Kasyapa I, was lost and forgotten by those in this country. What lingered of Sigiriya were tales from the ancient chronicle Cūḷavaṃsa (sequel of the Mahāvaṃsa) and other contemporary documents. It is most likely that Kings from Nissankamalla to Sri ...

Book Review – Fruits of Virtue: an Early History of St. Joseph’s College, Colombo – By Avishka Mario Senewiratne and Dr. Srilal Fernando – By Lal Medawttegedara Source : dailymirror When we turned into the College Drive, I was of course, most anxious to get a view of the building, but in those days the present great stretch of playground was covered with fine spreading trees which hid the structure, and it was not until we arrived at the lawn in front of the Lake House that St. Joseph’s College came into view. Description of St. Joseph’s College by a teacher who accompanied Fr. Lytton to the school at the turn of the 20th Century.   The above description by an unnamed teacher quoted in Senewiratne’s textual labour of love, Fruits of Virtue, is perhaps too close to the authors’ own efforts to reign in a historical narrative of one of Sri Lanka’s ...

Ignatius of Colombo: The Charmed Life of a Genius Priest – By Avishka Mario Senewiratne Source:-medium.com Talent, passion and humility are virtues hard to emulate. Seldom are found, those who have all three. Fr. Ignatius Perera of revered memory, was one such individual born to this palm-fringed isle, Sri Lanka. Some remember him as the Radio priest. Some recall his prowess in training choirs as well as his concerts. But those who were truly touched by his generosity were those who were deprived of hope when they dropped out of school not knowing what to do. For he clothed and fed them as well as educated them, giving them the life they deserved. When he suddenly passed away in January 1981, The Catholic Messenger mentioned the following about him: “The fascinating personality of Fr. Ignatius should be the subject of serious study by those concerned with the training of pastors…Born into a ...

The long and steady journey of St. Joseph’s College-by Dr.Mario Gomez Source:Dailymirror An Early History of St. Joseph’s College by Avishka Mario Senewiratne and Dr. Srilal Fernando In this book, Avishka Senewiratne and Srilal Fernando explore the early history of St Joseph’s College. The book locates the beginnings of the College in the social and political milieu of late 19th and early 20th Century Ceylon, and discusses some key events and personalities associated with St Joseph’s from 1892 to 1936. What started initially as an article on the principal benefactors of the school has now evolved into a book with text and pictures that look in detail at some of the events leading to the establishment of what is now a leading Catholic educational institution. Following the release of Archbishop Bonjean’s pastoral letter on education a group of wealthy Catholics gathered in Colombo on April 2, 1892 and pledged contributions for ...

Roman Catholic filmmaker Noel Crusz-by Robert Crusz Source:Dailymirror Noel Crusz was born in 1921 and ordained a Roman Catholic priest in the order of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI) in 1948. Finding that “celibacy is martyrdom”, as he wrote, he was dispensed from his vows and returned to lay status in 1965. He married in 1967, emigrated to Australia and passed away there in 2003. The famous Australian journalist, the late Alan Gill, writing about Noel Crusz, said “He was at various periods, sometimes concurrently, priest, filmmaker, writer and journalist. Add ventriloquist, puppeteer, broadcaster, catechist, and beloved husband of his wife Tirzah, and you have the measure of the man.” Fr. Aloysius Pieris S.J. called him “ … a Catholic priest decades ahead of his country’s local Church in appreciating and fostering the catechetical potentialities of Social Media ….” In a newly published book, “Noel Crusz’s Little Bike Lost ...
