“HOORAY FOR COORAY” – by Des Kelly Dayal Cooray, the author of this little piece, which I thought was quite funny in it’s own way, is the only son of Denis Peiris Cooray, a ‘Supply Commander’ of the Royal Ceylon Navy, under whom I served. D.P. Cooray was truly an Officer & a Gentleman, as the saying goes, and I was proud to be the Supply Assistant he chose, to visit our Government Stores daily in order to procure everything our Navy needed to keep ourselves going, at the time.  It was a ‘special job’ and I was proud to do it, keeping out of  trouble, which I seemed to be prone to, whenever I was not at work.  Until quite recently, I knew Dayal only as a young lad, at his Dad’s home in Torrington Square, Colombo, very close to one of the oldest and most famous  Radio Stations ...

“KURUMBA VIRGIN OIL” – by Des Kelly Sent into public scrutiny, via video,  by a good friend from Sri Lanka, Dayal Cooray, is yet another miraculous product that could be obtained from the simple Coconut tree. For those of my readers  who are not aware of it (and should be),  there is not a shred of any coconut  tree that is not usable, ever. From the nuts at the apex, to the surrounding branches & those beautiful green leaves, down  to the straight or curved barks,it is one of Mother Nature’s gifts to mankind. Then, coming to the nuts themselves, which provide “husks” that are very handy for domestic use, followed by the solid, hard Coconut shell, also used for various purposes such as large spoons or “Polkatu-handas” as the Sinhalese folk call them. EVERY LITTLE BIT of the Coconut tree is used, and now we have this video telling us ...

“MEMORIES-PLUS” – By Des Kelly     Not everyone has the “gift” of remembering the good old days, as we call them, but whoever wrote this little story remembers plenty. It is a shame though, that he/she forgot to take the credit for writing such a memorable little true story, about life in general, in Ceylon(I think), so many years before the Island’s name was changed to Sri Lanka. I base this possibility on the fact that I remember most of what was written, and while full credit is given to the unknown author of this very interesting haven of memories, I take pleasure in reposting it for all e’Lanka members.  I must also thank my good friend, Dayal Cooray, for posting it, in the first place. ...

“The Cockroaches Are Back”! – By Des Kelly    A most interesting “return” of a story that has been aired before. Too little, and too late, as regards to a resurgence of Lansi-Eelam, I am afraid, but for those of you who missed the 1st Edition, do try and read this fascinating story about the Burghers of Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), brought back to life, by a good friend, Dayal Cooray, who incidentally, was the only Son of a fine Supply Officer of the Royal Ceylon Navy, my immediate boss, Captain Dennis Peiris Cooray, yet another superb example of a Sinhalese Gentleman/Philanthropist, who did a heap of worthwhile charity work, even after he retired from the Navy. Amazing as it seems, Dayal is now in touch with me at present, after his Dad & Mum both passed away, (bless their dear Souls), and where he resurrected this post from, I ...
