Closing Of The Centenary – Photos That Could Not Be Included In the Centenary Publication – By Algi Wijewickrema Source: Pre-Seventies Peterites   Rather than stick with the chronological order of historical occurrences, I’d like to pick up on a historical event that affected not only St. Peter’s but all Colombo based schools, the country and the entire world. I am referring, of course, to World War II. When St. Peter’s was requisitioned by the Royal Navy for their war effort, the College lost no time in arranging to move initially to a school that existed in the premises of St. Hugo’s Church in Minuwangoda and St. Francis Xavier’s Seminary premises at Bambalapitiya and later to St. Mary’s Church premises in Dehiwela. Pictures show the record on the log book at the Primary Section about the move to Bambalapitiya, life and Minuwangoda (the collage extracted from ‘The Peterite’ Magazine of ...

WINSTON TAMBIMUTTU – ONE OF THREE PETERITE ATHLETES FROM THE FIFTIES WHO WON NATIONAL HONOURS – by Upali Obeyesekere Source:  JOSEPHIAN-PETERITE NEWS St. Peter’s College has produced numerous star athletes since the early 1930s, a few who later emerged as national champions. As ‘St. Joseph’s College South’, the school by the Wellawatta Canal was established in 1922. The school was re-branded and named St. Peter’s College in 1927. The name change was documented on April 8, 1927, vide Gazette Notification No.7575. Ninety-nine years later, we pay homage to Rev. Fr. Maurice Le Goc, Rector of St. Joseph’s College for his foresight and vision in establishing this great seat of learning. Rev. Fr. Nicholas Perera was consequently appointed Rector of St. Peter’s College in 1927, and due to his inspired leadership sports was introduced. Athletics commenced in earnest at St. Peter’s after the expansion of the picturesque College grounds, which was opened ...

PREFECTS BODY – ST. PETER’S COLLEGE – By: Upali Obeyesekere – Josephian-Peterite News Network Source:  Josephian-Peterite News Network The history of St. Peter’s College Colombo has been chronicled many times over in numerous write-ups over the last ninety-nine years, since 1922. I will not dwelve into all the logistics involved in establishing St. Peter’s College but would only salute the utopian founder of the school – Rev. Fr. Maurice J. Le Goc (hereinafter called, “Fr. Le Goc”). Fr. Le Goc arrived in Ceylon (Sri Lanka now) in 1914. He was appointed to St. Joseph’s College (Founded in 1896) as head of the School’s Science Department. In 1919 Fr. Le Goc was appointed the Rector of St. Joseph’s College. While being the Rector he was also a teacher of science – especially botany, biology, zoology and astronomy. ...

Maurice Le Goc who was the 1st Rector while the name of the College was St. Joseph’s College Colombo South). Even the summary is somewhat lengthy as Fr. Nicholas Perera’s achievements for St. Peter’s are legion. VERY REV. FR. D J NICHOLAS PERERA OMI, MA; BSC (LOND) (1927-1943) Rev. Fr. Nicholas Perera was first appointed as the President of the newly opened school, St. Joseph’s College, Colombo South when it opened on 18th January 1922. The reason being that Rev. Fr. Maurice Le Goc who was Rector of St. Joseph’s College, Colombo functioned as the Rector of the newly established school ...
