PAKISTAN’S LOVE OF SRI LANKA By Sanjeewa Jayaweera   Sanjeewa Jayaweera   Mr and Mrs Bhutto, Mrs Bandaranaike and the author’s father It was on 3rd January 1972 that our family arrived in Karachi from Moscow. Our departure from Moscow had been delayed for a few weeks due to the military confrontation between Pakistan and India. It ended on 16th December 1971. After that, international flights were not permitted for some time.    The contrast between Moscow and Karachi was unbelievable. First and foremost, Moscow’s temperature was near minus 40 degrees centigrade, while in Karachi, it was sunny and a warm 28 degrees centigrade. However, what struck us most was the extreme warmth with which the airport authorities greeted our family. As my father was a diplomat, we were quickly ushered to the airport’s VIP Lounge. We were in transit on our way to Rawalpindi, the airport serving the capital of ...

Murali gets involved in cricket after ten years -by Rex Clementine Source:Island Cricket’s most successful bowler – Muttiah Muralitharan retired from the game in 2011 and for ten years he had little involvement with Sri Lanka Cricket, although he offered his services elsewhere in the IPL and to the Australian Test team. With his appointment on Friday to the Cricket Committee headed by Aravinda de Silva that’s set to change.   “To be honest, nobody asked me to get involved before. Namal called me and asked whether I can help. This is the first time someone has asked me whether I can be of some help.  I said if I am coming in, it had to be a good team and we have a very good one in Aravinda, Kumar Sangakkara and Roshan Mahanama,” Muralitharan told Sunday Island. ...

Cricketers cornered as officials make great escape-BY CALLISTUS DAVY Source:Sundayobserver Flashback: Jayantha Dharmadasa holds up a document for the media to see while accusing his rivals of corruption and financial malpractice in the run-up to the election of office bearers in 2018 flanked by Nishantha Ranatunga. He lost the election but is now embedded with the very people he accused of destroying the administration of cricket While the emphasis has been on slashing the earnings of an under-performing Sri Lanka team and the appointment of a Cricket Committee to clean up an infested set-up, the sport’s shadowy behind-the-scene office bearers responsible for the bog down have got away Scot-free and possibly having the last laugh. The latest chapter in the episode projects the cricketers as fall guys or scapegoats while officials running the establishment who have been a law unto themselves and held every card that brought about the team’s ...

High profile cricket committee named-By Rex Clementine Two of the finest players produced by the country – Kumar Sangakkara and Aravinda de Silva will be part of the newly formed Cricket Committee. The Sports Ministry yesterday brought Sri Lanka Cricket down a notch by appointing a high profile Cricket Committee. While Cricket Committees in the past used to be an advisory arm for SLC, the role of the body has been diluted in recent times with eminent former players not wanting to be part of the set up. However, following recent poor showings and a series of on field and off the field controversies, a committee comprising former greats Aravinda de Silva, Roshan Mahanama, Kumar Sangakkara and Muttiah Muralitharan have been brought in to address the slide. ...

The Sangakkaras Erudite & Charitable: At Home and Abroad Source:Thuppahis An Accidental Encounter ….  and An Illuminating Outcome When I was in Sri Lanka at some point in the late 1990s on research work, my cricketing links with such individuals as PI Pieris and Michael Tissera encouraged me to take in some of the international cricket matches taking place in the capital city of Colombo. On one occasion I witnessed a match at the Khettarama Stadium where Sri Lanka A took on a West Indian side. I was in the BCCSL section at midwicket where the spectators were few and quite interspersed. I heard an elderly gentleman behind me explaining some of the finer points of the unfolding match to his wife beside him. At one point I turned round and amiably indicated that he understood the finer points of cricket. It turned out that he was a venerable lawyer ...

What’s England doing right in Sri Lanka -by Rex Clementine Source:Island There was a time when England barely lasted three days in Galle. The extreme heat, tracks that turned square and skilful spinners brought misery upon successive England teams. But they have found a way to turn the tide. What is England doing right to succeed in Sri Lankan conditions? In the last ten years, England have visited the island on three occasions and have never lost a series. The easy answer is to say that the Sri Lankan team has lost some big names and the team is in transition. That’s not the truth. When England squared the two match series in 2012, the big three – Kumar Sangakkara, Mahela Jayawardene and T.M. Dilshan – were very much part of the side. So, they must be doing something right to do well here. ...
