The Study Australia Showcase was organised by the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), an Australian government agency. “An impressive number of students expressed their eagerness to select Australia as their preferred location for advanced education,” Dr Monica Kennedy, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner, Austrade, said in a press release from the Australian High Commission. “We collaborate with Sri Lankan students to ensure they are making optimal choices when considering studying in Australia.” UNESCO estimates that approximately 10,500 students are currently studying in Australia as of August 2023. Sri Lanka scouts attending coronation ceremony of King Charles 111 meets President Source:Dailymirror Four Rover Scouts from the Sri Lanka Scout Association representing Sri Lanka at the Coronation Camp organised by The Scout Association, United Kingdom called on President Ranil Wickramasinghe in London this morning.  The Scouts discussed with the President their role in supporting the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Consort Camilla.  Further discussions on the role of young people to take on the future leadership of the country was discussed where the President encouraged the Scouts to actively engage in national and global issues particularly highlighting the global climate crisis.  The four Scouts who represented Sri Lanka Scouts at the Coronation were Shalini Perera, Aritha Bandara, Asel Bandara and Sarith Fernando. Finance Minister and President Ranil Wickramasinghe said that while presenting the budget speech to the Parliament, it is proposed to appoint a committee for that purpose through the 2023 budget. Meanwhile, a tax of Rs. 2 for cannabis has also been proposed in the budget presented today. A Sri Lankan athlete and a senior official have gone missing after the fifth day’s events of the 22nd Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England on Tuesday. Initial reports indicate that a female judoka and the manager of the Sri Lanka Judo Team have disappeared from the Sri Lankan camp soon after she lost her first-round event on Monday. The Sri Lankan Team Management have immediately informed the relevant authorities about their disappearance and the Birmingham Metropolitan Police have started a special inquiry into the incident. As a result, the Chef-de-Mission of the Sri Lankan contingent Maj. Gen (retired ) Dampath Fernando told that he has decided to acquire all passports of the Sri Lankan contingent to avoid further disappearances. SRI LANKA NEWS (JUNE 2022) Compiled by Victor Melder Asia Siyaka (AS) tea market report for sale no. 21, covering the period May 31- June 1, indicates a production drop of nearly 10 million kilos compared to 2021. Results for the year up to the above dates, the report said, was 111.5 million kilos. Comparatively, for the same period in 2021, production recorded was 122.25 million kilos, indicating a minus variant for the comparative period of about 10 million kilos. The formalized plantation sector was not on hand to corroborate these results. However, tea smallholders and private tea factory owners, when contacted, confirmed a drop in production. It should also be noted that tea smallholders are responsible for 75 per cent tea production. Among the major factors that accounted for these results was the ill- advised decision by the current administration to ban imported fertilizer and the lack of weedicides. ...
