EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES THAT PETERITES STARTED BEFORE THE JOSEPHIANS – Algi Wijewickrema St. Peter’s College was launched as St. Joseph’s College, Colombo South by Rev. Fr. Maurice Le Goc, the visionary Rector of St. Joseph’s College in 1922 and obviously sports and many other extracurricular activities were introduced by St. Joseph’s from early years. Two examples are Cricketers studying at St. Peter’s playing for St. Joseph’s College up until a separate team represented St. Peter’s in 1927 and Football launched at St. Peter’s in 1925 while it was still St. Joseph’s College Colombo South. Although it is obvious that this should be the natural order of things, as St. Peter’s progressed as a College independent of St. Joseph’s after 1927, there are at least three activities that St. Peter’s College introduced before its brother school. This should not come as a surprise to anyone, least of all to Peterites as their ...

Tour of St Peters College, Colombo, April 2023 – by Joe Paiva “A week before I left Sri Lanka in mid April 2023, I met with the St. Peters College, Colombo, President Old Boys Union ( OBU), Ravika de Silva as pre-arranged at the Dutch Burgher Union (DBU) cafe in Colombo. One thing led to another, and Ravika was gracious enough to offer to take me on a tour of College. The students were on holidays and there couldn’t have been a better time. Normally access to the complex is restricted, unless permitted by Rev Fr Rector. The whole complex from Galle Road (west), to the east including the grounds at the rear is overseen by security personnel at all times for good reasons. My first attempt to look around College in February failed, as I was not aware of the protocol. Following is my real life impression of 20th ...

“PAPA DE NIESE” I am nearly certain that this is the man involved in this fascinating story sent in by Algi Wijewickrema & Keith Bennett. I was a Peterite of this era, but our Masters were always better known by their nicknames and Papa de Niese was certainly one of the ‘top ones’. Desmond Kelly.. (Mr.Music) (Editor-in-Chief)…e’Lanka. Source:Facebook After the names of Rev. Fr. Maurice Le Goc and Rev. Fr. Nicholas Perera, arguably the most mentioned name in the annals of early College history, is that of George Henry de Niese and it would not be right to close the centenary year without a tribute to this versatile person that served St. Peter’s in more than one way. It is not only for his contribution as a teacher, artist, musician and designer that he deserves to be remembered but also for the legacy he left behind. Based on records available ...

Closing of The Centenary Year – By Algi Wijewickrema Deviating from publishing photos that could not find space in the Centenary Publication, this time around, I decided to give details about a legacy that does not get highlighted much. That is the legacy of the first Peterite Captain of the Joe-Pete series. Some rare pictures are also included. Legacy Of George Jayaweera Among the immortals who played in the Peterite Cricket team that faced the Josephians for the first time in 1933 in what subsequently came to be known as the ‘Big Match’, a name that cannot be forgotten is George Jayaweera, the captain. Though not dubbed the ‘Big Match’ then, the Josephian-Peterite is arguably the most looked forward to in the annual calendar of sporting events at St. Peter’s and St. Joseph’s. George Jayaweera’s captaincy began in 1932 and in that year, as reported in “The Peterite” Magazine of ...

PETERITE ANNIVERSERIES IN SEPTEMBER– by Algi Wijewickrema         Eleven Reverend Priests have held the august position of Rectorship at St. Peter’s College since the first, Rev. Fr. Nicholas Perera. But regrettably I missed recording the anniversary of his handing over the batten to Rev. Fr. Basil A Wiratunga when I recalled another anniversary on 9th September. Although the date is the same the two anniversaries fall three years apart from each other. Fr. Nicholas Perera, after his long and successful tenure as Rector at College (since 29th June 1927 or even before as Manager from 18th January 1922 and as Principal from 1926), handed over the Rectorship to the obvious choice at the time, Fr. Basil Wiratunga, on 9th September 1943. Since the farewell happened to be during the war years and while College was operating from three different locations, the farewell was not as elaborate as it could have ...
