Tour of St Peters College, Colombo, April 2023 – by Joe Paiva “A week before I left Sri Lanka in mid April 2023, I met with the St. Peters College, Colombo, President Old Boys Union ( OBU), Ravika de Silva as pre-arranged at the Dutch Burgher Union (DBU) cafe in Colombo. One thing led to another, and Ravika was gracious enough to offer to take me on a tour of College. The students were on holidays and there couldn’t have been a better time. Normally access to the complex is restricted, unless permitted by Rev Fr Rector. The whole complex from Galle Road (west), to the east including the grounds at the rear is overseen by security personnel at all times for good reasons. My first attempt to look around College in February failed, as I was not aware of the protocol. Following is my real life impression of 20th ...

Rugby in 20th Century Sri Lanka & Havelocks Sports Club 2023 – by Joe Paiva   I spent some time at both CR & FC & Havelocks Club room recently. Anecdotal information indicates  Club rugby is on the slow decline. While School & College Rugby has a greater appeal and following in the wider community.  Club rugby is highly commercialised and players are chasing money. Hopping clubs from time to time. The loyalty, passion and tradition no longer exists. Unlike the 40s 50s, & 60s  In the 50s and 60s players purchased their boots and  attire. Not any more The clubs during the weekends and public holidays switches into unofficial Pub, Sports bar  ( Watering Hole ) for members only. Sadly the Clifford Cup has lost its luster Note, the humble brown timber caravan, on wheels, the original club rooms in 1930/40s. I presume. Havelocks in terms of facilities pales ...

eLanka’s new logo in the recent newsletter – By Joe Paiva Dear Readers of Elanka, Australia & all over the world. I wonder if you noted eLanka’s new logo in the recent newsletter. Excellent design. I applaud eLanka’s project team for creating the poignant image. Oil Lamp in the Centre flanked by the two respective national flags. Symbolic of a Bridge, assimilation, fellowship, two cultures , one a rich very ancient traditional South Asian culture and the other relatively new. Lighting the the World, a gentle caring touch of the minds  and hearts of all Sri Lankans & Australians. One of serving humanity without  premeditated expectations. Instantly  Capt Elmo ( Blue Skies) Jayewardene,’s  ethos came to mind. Quote ” Far better to light a candle, rather than curse the darkness” Elmo’s Candle is somewhat similar to eLanka’s Oil Lamp, except the word ‘Poor’. PS CandleAid: A shining light for those ...

I lost sense of time until my sister reminded me that it was time to return home. However the grounds and surroundings in 2023, is very much commercialised  with big bill boards,  PR advertisements of big Bussiness houses. Nevertheless grounds, clubroom, beautifully landscaped outer area looks great”. Joe Paiva ...
