OBITUARY Dr AHMED NAISZ HANIFFA 9 JANUARY 1935 – 7 DECEMBER 2023 It is with much  sadness that I refer to the death of Dr AN Haniffa who I have known for the past nearly eighty years. Affectionately called “Hani” or even “Honey” he was one of three Moor boys who entered Royal College in 1946.   The two others viz Hussein Ismeth Rahim aka Tooty, Jehan Raheem, have both predeceased him.  Dr AN aniffa Haniffa on completing his education at Royal College, entered the Ceylon Medical College following in the footsteps of elder brother MN Haniffa who was a year senior to us in school.  I know that the elder brother represented Royal at Rugby, and I have a faint recollection of Hani too playing rugby for Royal. Both brothers passed out as doctors in the mid to late nineteen fifties. After gaining post graduate qualifications in England, Hani ...

Mr. Cull believed that well trained and disciplined youth at school will later become more responsible citizens with leadership skills and eventually will be better prepared for success in life. History says that about 320 Ceylon school cadets at the ages of 16 to 20 years had volunteered to fight alongside the Allied Forces in the Great War from 1914 to 1918. Royal, St Thomes, Trinity and Kingswood sent ...

OBITUARY : JEHAN RAHEEM – By Hugh Karunanayake JEHAN  RAHEEM  (19. 6. 1935 – 25.10.2023) Jehan Raheem, my  classmate through Royal Prep School and thereafter in Royal College,, and an outstanding  intellect, passed away in his home in New York, yesterday. His demise was mistakenly announced a week ago, but the end was near, and he finally  succumbed to the ravages of cancer in the morning of 25 October. A man given to a wry sense of humour, would have been thinking on the lines of Mark Twain on the unintended falsity, by exclaiming that “rumours of my death are vastly exaggerated”! Born in Hulftsdorf where his father enjoyed a lucrative practice as a lawyer, Jehan was the eldest of nine children, all high achievers, with Jehan the eldest showing the way to his younger siblings. . Of portly build, he was a friendly and genial person very popular with ...

Royal College in Colombo: Its History-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis Lam Seneviratne, whose preferred title is “100 Years of Royal College at Reid Avenue” A centenary in the life of an Institution is a very long period and calls for much celebration. However, for Royal College, now 188 years old, a grand celebration to mark 100 years at Reid Avenue may not be appropriate. Rev. Joseph Marsh It is opportune to look back to the 88 years of Royal College before its life at Reid Avenue  and make a brief sketch. In 1831 the Rev. Joseph Marsh, a 28-year-old Scotsman, arrived in Ceylon as a Missionary of the Church Missionary Society in Cotta (Kotte). He was a Mathematics and Classics Tutor and was appointed the Headmaster of the CMS. This Institute educated and trained young men to be catechists and priests of the Anglican Christian faith, to go out as missionaries and minister ...
