It has become part of our national social calendar, an event that must be organised, a tradition that must be kept. Practically every institution, from nurseries to universities to companies to Rotaract Societies, has a shot at holding one. In Colombo, and most major cities, Avurudu Ulela, or Festivals, serve a decorative function. They are designed, structured, and “ordered” to represent the ideal of Avurudu. In a typical Avurudu Festival, at least the best among them, spectators are made to imagine what Avurudu means, or is supposed to mean. Our contention is that ...

Hulugalle’s Appreciation of Revd Senior’s Career in Old Ceylon-by Michael Roberts Source:Thuppahis FROM the recent ISLAND article …. 3-3-2024 …. by HAJ HULUGALLE on Revd SENIOR of Trinity and Ceylon” .… with highlighting emphasis added by The Editor, Thuppahi “Robert Crossette Thambiah and I, devoted old pupils of his, published these short poems in a slim volume called “Vita Magistra.” The centenary of the birth of W. S. Senior falls on Friday, May 10. Some of my younger readers may well ask, who he was and why any notice should be taken of his hundredth birthday. Walter Stanley Senior came to Ceylon in 1906 and, when I first met him in 1910, he was Vice-Principal of Trinity College, Kandy. He was a fine classical scholar, a great teacher, a social worker and, although a Yorkshireman, Sri Lanka’s best poet. ...

OBITUARY Dr AHMED NAISZ HANIFFA 9 JANUARY 1935 – 7 DECEMBER 2023 It is with much  sadness that I refer to the death of Dr AN Haniffa who I have known for the past nearly eighty years. Affectionately called “Hani” or even “Honey” he was one of three Moor boys who entered Royal College in 1946.   The two others viz Hussein Ismeth Rahim aka Tooty, Jehan Raheem, have both predeceased him.  Dr AN aniffa Haniffa on completing his education at Royal College, entered the Ceylon Medical College following in the footsteps of elder brother MN Haniffa who was a year senior to us in school.  I know that the elder brother represented Royal at Rugby, and I have a faint recollection of Hani too playing rugby for Royal. Both brothers passed out as doctors in the mid to late nineteen fifties. After gaining post graduate qualifications in England, Hani ...

ROYAL COLLEGE CADET PLATOON 1980-By Admiral Ravindra C Wijegunaratne Source:Island An extract from the book “G R A T I T U D E” (Retired from Sri Lanka Navy) Former Chief of Defence Staff The School Cadet Organization of Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon) was established in 1881 by Mr. John B Cull, the Principal of Royal College, Colombo 7. The idea of introducing Cadetting to Royal was to train the students on drill to make them disciplined and responsible. Mr. Cull believed that well trained and disciplined youth at school will later become more responsible citizens with leadership skills and eventually will be better prepared for success in life. History says that about 320 Ceylon school cadets at the ages of 16 to 20 years had volunteered to fight alongside the Allied Forces in the Great War from 1914 to 1918. Royal, St Thomes, Trinity and Kingswood sent ...
