Digging up a Royal ethos and tradition By Yomal Senerath-Yapa Source:Sunday Times From Hill School Academy in Wolfendhal to Moor Street as a state school; the first 35 years of one of Colombo’s leading boys’ schools is vividly brought to light in D. L. Seneviratne’s book, From Marsh to Boake: The Founding Fathers of Royal College “Beneath the sway of Marsh and Boake Where it all began: Rev. J. Marsh started his Hill Street Academy in Wolfendhal 1835 where now stands the tiny chapel-Oratory of St. Paul’s built in 1932 Thenceforth did Lanka’s learning thrive.”So sing the boys of Royal College.     “THESE SHOES/BOOTS WERE MADE FOR WALKIN – By Des kelly & Got Noisy Shoes? This Guide Will Stop the Squeaking   My dear dad, Carlo Kelly (God rest his soul), always made it quite clear to all of us, and everyone, in fact, that it did not matter a hoot, if one was dressed “to the hilt”, but our shoes were not polished & shiny, it was totally a wasted effort. He was a senior Cadet at Royal College, Colombo, and his boots and shoes always had that “mirror-finish” that none of the other Cadets could seem to accomplish, and, until he passed on, his favourite pastime was polishing and making comfortable, the shoes of his entire family. He absolutely loved doing this, and we did not make any serious efforts to stop him, after all, he was “Dad” & he always did it, his way.      So, ...

Eustace Lorenz Pereira could quite easily be regarded as the most outstanding sportsman produced in the 180-year-old history of Royal College, Colombo, an academic institution that can trace its beginnings way back to 1835. As the college song goes “and thence did Lanka’s learning thrive.” Lorenz (Lollo to some), as he is affectionately known, excelled – and that is merely putting it mildly –with five colours in major sports – cricket, rugby, tennis, athletics and, in addition, Public Schools athletics colours. He also captained the Royal cricket ...
