Queen Elizabeth in Ceylon in 1954 in Pictures-by Michael Roberts The Mayor of Kandy, Mr. E.L. Senanayake escorting the Queen through the College premises (College car park at present) Source:Thuppahis The Queen and Prince Philip visited the island of Ceylon in 1954 and participated in striking ceremonies in Colombo, Kandy and Peradeniya University. The Senate Building at Peradeniya University was formally ‘consecrated’; and the Queen also visited the Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. The Queen also visited the famous Trinity College with the Mayor of Kandy (EL Senanayake) as Aide of Honour. Here she honoured and was honoured by the Trinity cadet corps …. a set of actions that reminds us of the “Empire loyalism” that had prompted a number of Westernised Sri Lankans to enlist in the British armed forces during World War I as well as World War II (a topic recently documented** in the new illustrated book edited by ...

Regrets I have a few!! – by Sam Thevanayagam Source : Sam Thevanayagam Linked In One of my regrets as a teenager was not playing in the Royal Thomian Cricket match for which the city that I grew up in comes to a stand still. This cricket encounter has been played for 143 years not stopping for wars pandemics & political protests. Even though I was on the squad I never played due to my own fault. Well that regret changed today when a young man from my Alma Mater S.Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia made his debut at the big match in Colombo. I have sponsored his school and boarding fees for the last few years. Young talent from the south of the country that was given an opportunity as I stepped up to help. How will you redeem a childhood misstep? no regretsStanding 3rd from left in picture is me from 1979!! ...

Dr  R L HAYMAN – The Legend Lives On Forever – by Milinda Hettiarachchi One of the things that comes foremost to any Thomian’s mind is the indebtedness and gratitude owed to the First Headmaster of S. Thomas  College at Gurutalawa, Dr Rolo L. Hayman who was also the longest serving Sub Warden at STC Mount Lavinia simultaneously for over 20 years. STC at Gurutalawa was modeled after Gordonstoun School in Elgin, in the north of Scotland that had been founded by Kurt Hahn and attended by Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh as well as Charles, Prince of Wales. Warden Canon R. S. De Saram declared that STC at Gurutalawa and STC Mount Lavinia were one and the same school and not two Colleges. Warden C. H. Davidson remarked quoting the poet William Wordsworth: “TWO Voices are there; one is of the sea, One of the mountains; each a mighty Voice…” Dr Hayman had taught the ...

Asitha Fernando’s Star-turn as Pace Bowler at Dhaka – By Dr Michael Roberts Source:thuppahis.com Rex Clementine, in The Island, 5 June 2022, where the title runs “From Beach Boy to recordbreaker” …. while emphasis via highlighting here is an intervention from The Editor, Thuppahi Arjuna Ranatunga’s mantra for turning the fortunes of a cricket team was backing outstation talents. Colombo ceased to own the exclusive rights for cricket and as a result, the game thrived. Three decades on the outstations are still producing match winners. There are still unearthed and untapped talents in far-off areas. One such created history last week by bowling Sri Lanka to a series win in Dhaka. From a beach boy of far off Katuneriya, Asitha Fernando went on to become the first Sri Lankan right-arm quick to claim a match bag of ten wickets. A fishing village on the northwest coast, Katuneriya is situated between the towns of Chilaw and Negobmo. ...

An outstanding Teacher at S. Thomas’ Prep Source:Stcobasydney Recollecting those golden years of my batch, when we as little lads walked through the gates of St. Thomas’ Prep door, still brings beautiful memories woven in gold! We were clad in blue shorts, spotless white sleeved shirts, polished shoes and clean white socks – which probably lasted until our first few classes – or our lunch/snack break. Carrying our “suitcases” entering the school by the sea and its rolling waters, the train passing to and fro on the other side of the boundary wall, being greeted and led into our class, how can one forget, unless memories fade. At times we wish we could re-set the clocks back – but this time we may attempt to do things a bit more different! ...
