Warden’s Letter to Old Boys – July 2021 S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia Feast of St Thomas the Apostle, 3rd July 2021 Dear Fellow Thomians, Fraternal greetings from the School by the Sea. As we start the second half of 2021 still in a situation where S. Thomas’, together with all schools in Sri Lanka, remains closed, I thought I should write to you to keep you informed of how things are going at the moment, so you will have accurate and up to date information about the state of things for your various alumni groups. Sad Realities of 2020 From March 2020 we were unable to engage in any of the usual activities that make up our school year including the various sports and society events, the Chapel Feast, the Carol Service, Colours Awards Ceremony and Prize Giving. An entire year group left us without having had the opportunity ...

A Tribute to Lucian Nethsingha (1936-2021) – By Roger F. Aldons (STC Chorister, 1955-1962) Source:Thomiana – S. Thomas’ College Old Boys Association Australia OBA Melbourne – Newsletter – May 2021 It was with great sadness that we were informed of the death, on Friday 12th February 2021, of Lucian Nethsingha. Lucian had been in poor health for a while, and latterly had been in a hospice in Cambridge. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. Born in Colombo, Ceylon, in 1936, Lucian was educated at S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, (STC) Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). We, together with the Thomian family and Lucian’s friends around the world fondly remember, with admiration and thanksgiving, Lucian Nethsingha, the extremely talented, successful Organist and Masterful Trainer of Choristers. He was a gentle, humble loyal Thomian gentleman, in every sense of the word, and a fellow Roy H. Bowyer Yin era chorister with ...

“Return” – a Poem Source:Thomiana – S. Thomas’ College Old Boys Association Australia OBA Melbourne – Newsletter – May 2021 Some five decades ago, as co-editor of the S. Thomas’ College magazine, I wrote this poem. It was published in the magazine then under the pen-name Junius (meaning “Youthful One”) – and I felt it appropriate (now that I am a Senex!) to publish again in the Thomiana to coincide with the 170th anniversary of my old school in Mount Lavinia, Sri Lanka. I glimpse afar the chapel tower – my heartbeat quickens, I hurry on. Reaching at last the trellised gate I gaze upon the cherished scene I’d longed to see. Thro’ all these years of wandering it lived with me in Memory’s store – the College that I love so well. I walk on down the curving road – echoing steps of bygone days. ...

Ode to St. Thomas’ College – Sesquicentennial Birthday Source:Thomiana – S. Thomas’ College Old Boys Association Australia OBA Melbourne – Newsletter – May 2021 Great Mother of stalwart Thomians dear, we hail you with joyous Birthday greetings and wish you many years of success great. Old Time has not marred your beauteous looks with tell-tale lines that baffle Loreal’s skills. Strong and agile, you defy the local GP’s fears, as you in sport, sprightly triumph, winning coveted trophies, creating records, the price and joy of alumni everywhere. Darling of Bishop Chapman, pioneer great who with consecrated, learned scholars dear, fostered values he learnt at hoary Eton. “Esto perpetua,” motto from his school: Was it a longing nostalgic, loving wish or a Classical scholar’s imperative? ...

The Import Of Sri Lankan Muslim Names Source:Groundviews My name is Mohamed Qadri Ismail. Mohamed Qadri Ismail is not my name. The statements may prompt a wtf. (The acronym, btw, of the World Taekwondo Federation.) Surely one cannot affirm a position and its contradiction. Yet I do.  The second sentence doesn’t necessarily negate the first. Mohamed Qadri Ismail, an impeccably Sri Lankan Muslim male nomination. Mohamed: the name of the prophet; Qadri: a Pakistani pir authorized it; Ismail: my father’s surname, his father’s before that, of Abraham/Ibrahim’s son well before that. (According to the Bible, Abraham, who lived for 175 years, begat Ishmael at 86.) ...

Kamal Samarasinghe, “Guest of Honour at RoyTho 2021, ‘ A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS, A TRUE GENTLEMAN, NATURALLY A THOMIAN” — S. Thomas’ College – Old Boys Association – NSW/ACT Source:-stcobasydney “A near fifty-year-old friendship with a kind, gentle and intelligent Thomian to his boot laces, has been a silver lining in my life “ I met Kamal Samarasinghe in 1970 when he played first XI cricket at S.Thomas’ College against St Benedicts. I myself had been at S.Thomas” Prep, for five years and had fond memories of my time there. St Thomas’ to me was a second home. Kamal was a wicketkeeper and a batsman of no mean repute. Our paths did not cross till we matched wits against each other at cricket. He with the bat and I with the ball. Memory fades but some remain despite the advent of time. Thomian openers in 1970 were Ravi Sathasivam ...

Bliss beyond the boundary lines-by Dishan Joseph Source:Dailynews The most significant event for the month of March in my calendar for the past three decades has been the spectacular cricket encounter between Royal College and S. Thomas’ College, known globally as the Royal-Thomian. This magnificent match is laden with so much sporting history and decorum, and has produced versatile players to our national cricket team for decades. Needless to say, since the advent of Whatsapp class groups, the month of March begins with classmates sharing photos of bygone school memories loaded with equal parts of sentiment and fun. Since we left school, so much has changed, obviously. ...
