Elephantine Tales – New Book by Srilal Miththapala Source:Dailymirror Srilal Miththapala recently launched his second book on elephants. This book is a collection of short anecdotes of his experiences in the national parks of Sri Lanka, doing what he yearns to, as often as possible – exploring nature, wild life and of course elephants. The book is full of ‘Elephantine Tales’ and a few other wildlife as well. It will be of interest to the die-hard wildlife fraternity, as well as to the laymen with some interest in wildlife   It is somewhat a personal odyssey re-living his experiences and close interaction with these gentle giants. It is written in simple language and the narratives are packed with in depth information about environment, wild life and elephant behaviour.   Here’s what the world famous elephant researcher of Amboseli fame, Dr Joyce Poole says about the book. ...

Quo Vadis Sri Lanka Tourism, Post Covid-19?-By Srilal Miththapala Source:Island There seems to be conflicting ideas as to how tourism should be promoted in the short term, in the post Covid -19 arena. A wide range of good initiatives have been proposed from various experts. We must not get carried away by emotion, and resort to ‘crystal ball gazing’, but make our plans, based on evidence and research. What seems to be overlooked is the need to properly understand the post Covid-19 consumer behaviour, and only focus source markets. Finally, it is the consumer who will decide, whoever he may be. The bottom line is that the ‘tourism world’ is not going to come back to normal for quite some time. Like everything else in our lives, consumers also will respond in a ‘new normal’ framework. Hence applying our traditional marketing strategies will not necessarily work in this uncertain environment. ...

The economic value of elephants in Sri Lanka for tourism-by Srilal Miththapala It is estimated that there are some 6,000 wild elephants in Sri Lanka today. This then means that there is a treasure worth more than Rs. 23.4 billion ($ 128 m) out in the wild Source:FT From time immemorial, travellers of days gone by and modern-day tourists have been fascinated by Sri Lanka’s elephants. Today, wildlife, and elephants in particular, is a major component of Sri Lanka tourism’s product portfolio. Unfortunately at the same time, due to haphazard and unplanned development, encroaching into hitherto elephant habitats, there are widespread altercations between man and elephant, resulting in large numbers of elephants dying. Today Sri Lanka has earned the dubious ‘honour’ of being rated as the country with the highest number of elephant deaths in the world. In this analysis I attempt to evaluate the economic benefits of an elephant ...

Sri Lanka Tourism a look back at 2018…..and what’s in store for 2019 – BY Mr. Srilal Miththapala   Sri Lanka has been recording steady YoY growth in arrivals during its post war arena, 2017 recording 2.3 m arrivals, with a CAGR of close upon 19% over the past 5 years. Total arrivals for 2018 is expected to only marginally increase over 2017.  In the absence of any strong and cohesive marketing campaign, which the private sector has been clamouring for over 2 years now, YoY growth percentage has been slowing down. A positive aspect is that foreign exchange earnings have also increased in almost same proportion, reaching Rs. 3.9 Billion USD in 2018, with average tourist spend per night now standing at USD 170. From 6th place among the leading foreign exchange earning sectors a few years ago, tourism has now climbed to 3rd place, and today contributes close ...
