Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal honoured in Wisdens best team of the year – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE (eLanka Sports Editor: Melbourne)   Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne and Dinesh Chandimal find themselves in elite  company with the release of Wisdens team of the 22/23 year.  The honour gives welcome credence and recognition to a team that has delivered many memorable cricketers over the past decades albeit,  as a younger member of world Test cricket. Karunaratne’s record as a consistently free scoring opener is without question drawn alongside Australian prolific run getter Usman Kuwaja who has also had a purple patch at the top of the order.  Chandimal has always been a highly talented batsman but fans will challenge his selection over some great players in the middle order.  Picked ahead of prolific batsmen such as  Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, Australia’s Steve Smith and  Englishman Joe Root will no ...

‘Creamy’ dubious Indians escape sanction despite irregular practice. – BY TREVINE RODRIGO IN MELBOURNE.  India sidestepped the furore of possible ball tampering and set a precedent that must be maintained if no action is taken against Ravinda Jadeja and Mohamed Sriraj. In what was definitely a breach of match protocols, the Indian duo blatantly helped each other with what was later claimed to be a ‘pain relieving cream’ while Jadeja was bowling against Australia.  The wily spinner who claimed five wickets in Australia’s first innings was clearly picked up by cameras rubbing a substance off the back of Sriraj’s hand and applying it to his spinning finger. Controversy raged following the incident as cricket fans and experts debated whether it constituted ball tampering. The new interpretation of the rules don’t allow anything to be introduced to the ball that could enhance its performance that would give the bowler an unfair ...

Smith, Labuschagne lead Aussie charge for clean sweep – By Trevine Rodrigo (eLanka Sports editor)   Australia have nailed home their dominance thanks to a dominent batting display to have the hapless Lankans against the ropes on the first day of the second Test in Galle. Crucial missed stumpings and lacklustre bowling at times, gave Manus Labuschagne and Steve Smith the gateway to Australia’s imposing total including Smith’s drought breaking century after 16 previous innings.  Labuschagne also posted his first century on the sub continent and Australia look commanding on a wicket that mysteriously lacked the usual wicked turn but was two paced in contrast,  giving a little more to accurate pace. This spells imminent danger to Sri Lanka’s batsmen who face the daunting prospect of dealing with Australia’s lethal pace attack who have routed some of the best batting in the world.  Australia gambled with retaining Mitchell Stark over ...

Australia’s greatest ever Test XI     Source:Theroar Australia is the most successful nation in Test match history with more wins and a higher winning percentage than any other established nation in the history of Test cricket. Selecting a side from almost 150 years of Test match cricket is no easy feat with many all-time greats not making the cut. I’m assuming that this side will play a Test match at either the MCG or SCG so I’ve gone with a three-to-one fast bowler to spinner mix. ...

“CRICKET, LOVELY CRICKET” – By Des Kelly And so, it is on again. Cricket, lovely Cricket, the Ashes Series, between the two arch-rivals of the game, England versus Australia. Coming to us via “The Guardian”, and Frank Bennett, this interesting little article gives us 19 things to look out for, in the Series, and, let me add the 20th, which is my prediction for the result of this “test series”. I think that Australia will win the Series, although, not by a big margin. England too, has an excellent team, this time, and Australia will have to fight this battle to the very end. The mere fact that Messrs. Smith & Warner are back in the side, for Australia, will be the difference in the game, I think, but as I have always said (& written),in ANY game, there has to be a Winner & a Loser. The ...

THE LOWEST POINT – by Desmond Kelly This”quote” does not come from this writer, in fact, it comes directly from Steve Smith, Captain of the present Australian Cricket Team, who has just lost a series of cricket, matches played “at home”, against South Africa. ” Losing the “test-series” against S.A., so comprehensively, both abroad and also “at home”, in Hobart, Tasmania is definitely the “low-point” of cricket” said the Australian Captain.,”not good enough” he continued, I need players who will do better”, was Steve’s personal quote on the ABC morning news. Sorry, Steve, you are the “Captain” of the Ship, and when the Ship goes down, the Captain is also just supposed to “go-down” with it & the rest of the crew. You are not supposed to “survive” & blame the rest of your crew for any disaster, whatsoever. If you were able to “save” your team in any shape, manner ...
