The history of the DSA group – freshmen of 1959 – By Sriyan Jayasekera The history of the Thomian OBA, is akin to an enormous tree that continues to spread its boughs in every direction.  It had its roots in the Banyan grove in Mutuwal in the northern part of Colombo, where my maternal grandfather Mr D.F.Suraweera (1896-1902) was a student.  That was at the turn of the twentieth century. Later the tree was ‘transplanted’ in a manner, and continued to flourish in the environment of Mount Lavinia, where now, the Thomian impress has been fixed upon one and all, reputedly as “the school by the sea”.         My father the late Mr D,S.Jayasekera (1947-1995) served on the tutorial staff for forty eight years. My personal involvement was directed by an invitation from my cohort to be the de–facto convener of my class group, under the banner, “Freshmen of ’59 – DSA era group,” (The ...

Thomians grab Peninsula Trophy at Sydney touch Sevens – By Trevine Rodrigo reporting from Sydney The weather God’s and S.Thomas aligned in Sydney to provide the unexpected at the Sri Lanka Schools Sevens touch Rugby competition graced by an appreciative crowd.  Inclement weather was forecast for the day,  and a well drilled Dharmaraja College was expected to go back to back at this now emerging competition in Sydney’s Sri Lanka expatriate sporting calendar.  But the unforeseen was delivered, with sunny conditions throughout, and the Thomians provided the upset of the competition when they stunned the favourites, Dharmaraja in the final, to grab the Peninsula Motor Group Trophy.  Still in its infancy, the Sevens touch competition, drawn on the lines of Rugby League rules, found new flair and more enthusiasm among its growing number of fans through the injection of players from around Australia opposed to the initial tournament which was ...

Sriyan Jayasekera : Promoting Thomian Goodwill Source:stcobasydney   Many of us know the name but given his self effacing nature he has eluded us for a number of years! Not this time Sriyan and we are proud to ‘unmask’ the mystery man behind the Thomian literature, emails, obituary notices and all matters relevant to STC that warrants sharing with the global Thomian community. A ‘Die hard’ who prefers being ‘behind the scenes’ his contribution in spreading the word to ‘Thomians Near and Far’ is well received and appreciated. Likewise every time someone sends him an ‘SOS’ to track someone down or share information , our veritable messenger pigeon, never fails to deliver. The DSA group forum he so meticulously runs speaks volumes of his ardor. Thank You Sriyan, for fostering the links between various sub-groups/OBAs and keeping us close to the Thomian mother ship. We hope, the vignettes we present, ...

Thomians “Break Free” by a whisker!! Source:-stcobasydney Overcoming unfamiliar challenges of the Pandemic and weary from a non-event year in 2020, the OBA committee was enthusiastically raring to “break free”. Martin Luther King Junior once said,” The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy”. True to this revelation, a bunch of young and novice OBA members, infused by those with experience, got down to facing a challenge that was not seen before. They succeeded in the face of uncertainly from a ‘new normal’, emphasised clearly by Master of Ceremonies veteran Duke Ramachandran from the podium, after his signature opening ritual for a Thomian event of ‘ringing the College bell’. This set the scene for a much-anticipated exhilarating night that fitted the theme “Break Free 2021”    On arrival, guests in their ...
