Two For Joy – by Charmaine Candappa High on the almost leafless tree, I see through my window a large bird’s nest. The magpies have taken over the nest and whirl confidently around it. I miss the sparrows occupying the nest and twittering from branch to branch. My husband a nature lover reminded me that magpies belong to the crow family with their black and white feathers. The magpies have an unsavory reputation for being notorious thieves, stealing eggs from bird’s nests, and pecking young birds. There is often a roof of twigs on top of the nests making it secure from other predators. There is an old folklore that says how to foresee the immediate future by the number of magpies seen together at one time. Growing up as a child in Srilanka, my friends would say “ one for sorrow, two for joy “, on seeing a brood ...

171 Homestead – By Charmaine Candappa I’ve been thinking a lot about my childhood home these days. 171 was a safe and familiar haven, a place that brimmed with memories that once filled us with a sense of security and peace. My family home that my father built and called Homestead comes to my mind ever so often . My childhood was lively, having a neighbor of my own age. I need to mention Rai as she was so much part of my childhood memories. Today our family home is dwarfed by tall shabbily constructed two and three storied buildings around it, a sad and pathetic sight seen almost all around the city of Colombo. As the years have so swiftly gone by, I think of those memories of my parents, my siblings, and all those domestics who helped my mother, and who came in and out of our household, a far ...

Benediction – By Charmaine Candappa I sense the Autumn’s smell of sweet decay And here the winter sparrow’s song. I see the mountains across the trail Veiled in snowy mist against the darkened sky. The rain and lightning join together for a few hours. I witness the trembling leaves and flowers in the rain As I sip my sweetened hot tea in bed.   Click here to receive your free copy of the eLanka Newsletter twice a week delivered directly to your inbox!   ...

Autumn Landscape – By Charmaine Candappa The days are short and dark, as the wind rustles its leaves gently. Huge trees explode in colors of orange, wine, and saffron, some a blushing pink and flame. The Elm lifts its branches to a stately arch above beside the Oak that stands massive and tall. The brooding Cypress remains always green while chipmunks scrabble down trees gathering fruit and nuts, storing it in their burrows. Mushrooms sprout up from from the damp earth, as a spider’s web glistens in the morning light. Delicate dragonflies seem to be suspended in the air. And a brood of ducks swim across the pond hoping to nestle across the swamp. I hear the symphony of the wind and observe the amazing beauty of Creation.   Charmaine Candappa   Click here to receive your free copy of the eLanka Newsletter twice a week delivered directly to your inbox!   ...

High Tide – By  Charmaine Candappa Of the high tide Broken sand dollar shells, seaweed of green. Moon snails homes left long ago. Heron’s tracks in the sand. Molten crab shells and an old clamshell. Sparkling bits of glass, teal green, amber, frosted brown, and elusive blue Shimmering in the wet glow. A wet feather floats by on the high tide While clouds sail in the sky. The Birds ( Where do they go? ) – By Charmaine Candappa On the trail I look up at the evening sky And watch the birds In aeronautical formation flying by. Where do they come from? Where do they go? PEACE – By Charmaine Candappa Peace is hearing of the water lapping on the shores of sand.  Peace is the whisper of the wind passing through the Oak trees outside. Peace is the sound of buzzing bees in late summer. Peace is the gurgling of a baby playing in the bathwater Peace is looking up at the night sky and seeing the millions star’s pinning the sky  Peace is in tranquility. ...

Hummingbirds  – by Charmaine Candappa I see the fanning of the hummingbirds wings  Through the window slats Whirling, swirling, around and around like propellers  Draining the honey feeder. Sudden flashes of glistening green  Just for a moment these colors are seen  Beaks bending in a feverish pace  Hummingbirds back and forth  From the big Oak tree to the patio  Always in a hurried race. Poem – Nostalgia – By Charmaine Candappa   NOSTALGIA In this twilight hour I sit alone thinking of last summer Of the hours together, of things we shared. Lessons learned, the tea and coffee breaks Followed by many study assignments. The trembling fears on those crucial days We had to conquer. I recall yesterday’s conversations Our hopes, our plans, and the sadness of parting. I remember how you tossed your salad shaking your bowl blending in the seasoning. I wonder how you are doing, yet knowing you are okay. I wonder if we would see each other again And in these many hours of aloneness I weave together the threads of my memories Tracing with hope a quilt with the separate pieces Each piece has my heart print. My gift to you, to wrap around your shoulders And feel the warmth of our friendship. Click here to receive your free ...
