DESMOND KELLY

“CALLING DR.CASEY” – By Des Kelly This is not about broken bones, folks. This is all about  BREAKING NEWS”, in the true sense of the word. A 57 floor brand new hospital, built in just 19 days, give or take an hour or two. China has achieved this amazing infrastructure obviously because of this new epidemic of Coronavirus that could well become a pandemic, as hundreds of people have already perished, most of them, in China. This Virus is spreading rapidly, a modern-day Plague that began in China, nonetheless, it seems that Chinese Authorities have moved just as rapidly to stall this horrendous “bug” and thus, should be congratulated on the building of this hospital, the first of a couple more, I am led to believe, in order to treat all patients who have been diagnosed with this wretched disease. Please watch this video to be thoroughly amazed. The introductory ...

“ORION, PERSONIFICATION OF ELVIS” – By Des Kelly Very recently, a television documentary caught my attention, and held it tenaciously, even though it was a fairly long “true story” regarding James (Jimmy) Ellis, a simple Americsn Country lad whose only wish was to be a great entertainer, pursued his dream, made his way to the “big sticks”, to finally be presented with the stage-name Orion, the masked “ghost” of the king of rock n roll Elvis Presley.           This is just an introduction to what was a most interesting story, which proves how tremendously difficult it is, for anyone to gain recognition, let alone “Star-status”, in   the entertainment field, in America, or anywhere else, for that matter. Orion “made it” alright, but only as a masked  Lone Ranger figure, emulating his own idol, Elvis, who had already passed on. Orion did not need that mask, ...

“SENANAYAKE, THE GOOD SAMARITAN” – By Des Kelly   It was indeed a proud political name, in the Ceylon I remember. Prime Minister Donald Stephan Senanayake, born 1883, and died in 1952, from wounds incurred in a tragic fall from his favourite horse, which unfortunately tripped, due to an unnoticed hole on the Galle-Face green, throwing this highly popular P.M. completely off. Don Stephan was a U.N.P. (United National Party) Stalwart,  highly educated both in English & Sinhala, was voted in as the Island’s first Prime Minister, and, not only did a superb job, but looked the part, as far as I was concerned. A truly distinguished Statesman, taken too soon.           D.S. Senanayake was succeeded by his eldest son.  Dudley Shelton Senanayake, immediately after the death of his father, was also popular with the people, as I remember, but could not follow in his ...

“ANOTHER BRIDGE TO BURN” – By Des Kelly Look at the magnificent Sydney bridge, or, for that matter, any famous bridge around the World, and one stops in their tracks to enjoy what they are looking at, but seldom does one, then try to imagine everything that went INTO the building of the structure before them. For all my eLanka readers, hope you good people have not forgotten the old Bridge on the River Kwai, which spawned a Hollywood Movie by the same name, but that, folks, is another story.           LET’S START WITH THE BUILDING OF THIS BRIDGE READ ALL THE WAY, TO THE END. IT IS BOTH ALARMING, AND VERY IMPORTANT.   Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)  eLanka. LET’S START WITH THE HISTORY OF THIS BRIDGE!  READ ALL THE WAY TO THE END – IT IS BOTH ALARMING AND VERY IMPORTANT China has opened the record-breaking 4,000 ft. long ...

“BREAKING NEWS. HOT, HOT, HOT”.!!! – By Des Kelly  Just goes to show what our “Social Media” is capable of. The furore of Climate-Change is now on the agenda, all around the world, yet, to all intents and purposes, this is all stale news. I have already written about this subject many times, have never claimed to be a “Climatologist” or an expert in this field, still, to anyone, with even half a brain, the realization that CLIMATE-CHANGE on Earth, has ALWAYS been going on, this “little blue ball” as I prefer to call it, is gradually, VERY GRADUALLY, moving closer to the “great golden ball” in the sky called the SUN, anyway, and NOTHING can change this. We humans CAN DELAY the ultimate catastrophic-climax, by reducing emissions, etc., etc., but the simple fact of the matter is that we CANNOT EVER STOP CLIMATE-CHANGE!!.          ...

“THE FURORE OF FAMILIES’-FIASCO” – By Des Kelly Royal Families, all around the world are ordinary families such as your’s or mine, the term “Royal” enhancing them for no other reason except history.   Kings and Queens come out into existence in exactly the same way as anyone else, propagated by a Father and delivered by a Mother. There are numerous Kings and Queens around this world of ours, but let me start with the “Royals” of Serendib, as the Island of Ceylon was originally known.  When we studied history at College, I clearly remember the names of King Dhutu-Gemunu, a proud Sinhalese King,  and an equally proud King Elara, a Tamil King, who “migrated” to the tiny Island from India, the “Mother-Country”, of which Serendib was once a part of,  separated much later by the Palk Strait, named after Governor Robert Palk (an Englishman) who ruled the Indian State ...

“FOR ALL ANIMAL LOVERS” – By Des Kelly She was born on the 13th of October 1934, in Greece, started her musical career at the tender age of six, has released literally hundreds of songs, both in Greek & English and endeared herself to many thousands of fans, “your’s truly” simply being just another ardent one. The lady I write about is Nana Mouskouri, beautiful, pitch-perfect, Pride of Greece.           This particular version, came to me via the grape-vine, including my good friend & musician Dallas Achilles, and as such, I felt that the many thousands of Animal-Lovers among the readers of eLanka would thoroughly enjoy this song (and video) telling the story about the enduring love between some humans and their adorable pets.             Nana has done many versions of this song, and I have publicised yet another version on ...

“THE ALMA MATER” – By Des Kelly   They say “Time passes, the Quality remains”,  a proud quote that could describe my College in Colombo. Seems difficult to believe that St.Peter’s College, in the Suburb of Bambalapitiya, is just two short years from “hitting a century”(in cricket language), talking of which, is, even now, on the top rungs of the “Gentlemen’s Game”, as we know it. Everybody loves cricket in Sri Lanka, and we have to remember that the Sport’s World Cup, just a few years ago saw our tiny ex-homeland beat the “huge” Australian team to take this cup home. In the same breath, I have to remind my readers that, while St.Joseph’s College in Maradana (I think), was the much larger School (plus Sister- College), to St.Peter’s, the Peterite Eleven always seemed to beat the Josephian Eleven, in what was the main cricket match of the Schools ...
