DESMOND KELLY

“THE PRESIDENT’S LIMOUSINE” – By Des Kelly This is, as the title says, an interesting story, not just for owners of expensive quality cars, but for everyone who has ever owned a motor vehicle with four wheels.  While this story is one about President Franklin D R’s Limo, I feel certain that every owner of his or her new car, thought of it as a Limousine. Mine was slightly smaller than that of the Pres., it was a second-hand Austin A40, with 4 cylinders, believe it or not. I loved that car. It ran beautifully on the flat streets of Melbourne, but when I once packed my young family in the rear seat, even on 2nd gear, it couldn’t make it up a slight grade on Heatherton Road, and started rolling backwards. Being the superb driver that I was, I managed to control the car in reverse, brought ...

“THE LESSON” – By Des Kelly          “We live and learn”, a famous English quote. In the context of time, our lives are but the blink of an eye, yet there are so many things one can learn during our lifetime, it seems very sad that there seems to be very little time in which to learn the most important things.           Below is a very good example of what we can learn from those who know what they are talking about, and I am proud to pass their messages to whom it may concern,                                   EVERYBODY!!.  Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) eLanka.  ...

“THE FACTS THAT MATTER” – BY Des Kelly Together with the undisputed fact that the new Pandemic of Corona-Virus (Covid 19), is the Scourge of our Planet at the moment, the fact that thousands have already died, and many more will, the fact that an already obvious Global Recession is in the offing, the fact that, even as I write, more than 80 Countries around our World have now shut down completely, and the final fact of the matter is that no-one seems to know what tomorrow will bring, there are, in fact (no pun intended), many more facts and statistics which bear reading about, and I have decided to bring them to you. If nothing else, dear readers, these stats will make you stop and think. Please read these authentic facts, and concentrate on the most important one.        It will NOT be in ...

“CORONA-COMMONSENSE” – By Des Kelly       This is my message to all Lankan/Aussies, firstly in this great brown Land that we now call home, secondly, to all our expatriots everywhere in the World, and thirdly, to anybody and everybody with a functioning brain in their heads, around this Planet which is, at the present moment, undergoing this Pandemic that surely is a once in a lifetime  experience for nearly 7.9 billion people.            I will leave all other Countries which are battling this Virus in their own particular way, and stick to Australia, for obvious reasons. I will TRY to list some commonsense ideas, in order to even partially9 clear up one of the most confusing subjects EVER to hit our television screens presently. These are my own ideas on the matter, and my own opinion on what has to be done ...

“GOD’S AIM” – By Des Kelly   God Almighty created man in his image for an unique purpose. He chose this little planet, called it Earth, and decided to then create the first man and woman, who were, in turn, meant to procreate more of the species, according to His holy command. From the entire Universe, Earth was chosen by HIM, for this specific purpose. This was God’s Aim, and the accuracy of our Creator could never be questioned simply because GOD was, is, and always be Perfection plus.             The following true story simply goes to prove exactly what my introduction is about. It is fairly long, readers, but please do read this from start to finish, and I feel certain that you will want to share this amazing information, and praise God for providing this for mere mortals like us.  Desmond Kelly. ...

“GOOD NEWS WEEK” – By Des Kelly    About time. As I have said, and written, many times before, GOD decides on what happens in HIS Universe. The ALMIGHTY does not cause all the problems that erupt on Earth from time to time, man does this. All the brains of man, rolled into one cannot stop the multitude of silly things we do, in order to keep the ball rolling, but instead of enhancing life, our ideas only help in the deterioration of the Planet as we know it. Utter greed for either power and/or money, are the “bad guys” in my book. This greed causes most of the catastrophe, and without going into details, or preaching a Sermon, this latest Pandemic of Corona virus, in my own mind, was started at one of these so-called  “Wet-Markets” in China, where ultra-greedy humans have been making money by capturing ...

“BELINGS THAT BELONG” – By Des Kelly  A tiny fruit that we first came to know about in Ceylon then, Sri Lanka now. Just like the “Umbrella” fruit, and tree that was quite possibly unknown in other Countries, these little fruits afforded us lots of teeth numbing pleasures that quite possibly also had us visiting our dentists sooner and much more often than the children of other climes.  I will never forget that sour, yet superb flavour, but although we never did have a Beling tree, we did have a huge Umbrella one, in our backyard, with plenty of fruits that we also enjoyed.  ...

“THE EYES HAVE IT” – By Des Kelly   A very interesting & informative piece on the importance of looking after the windows to your soul, your eyes. As soon as I read through the good advice given -gratis to everyone out there, it brought to mind that, especially nowadays, what with computers, ipads, iphones and other technological gadgets containing letters and numbers so small, even those with 20/20 eyesight would find that eye-strain would be part and parcel of being an Internet geek in the long run.           Speaking personally, there were no Computers in my day, yet I did not look after my own eyesight too well and ended up having to use spectacles while still quite young simply because I loved to read and would sometimes read as many as two fairly large novels a day. I enjoyed doing this but ...

“THE HOUSE OF ADMIRALS” The memories keep flooding back. I served in the Royal Ceylon Navy from 1953 until the end of 1961, when I had to buy myself out of a twelve year contract with the Force, in order to migrate to Australia. All of us Navy guys had to sign on for twelve years, and then resign for another ten, in order to be eligible for a Government pension. If you were still young enough to serve in the Senior Force, as the Navy was called, you could carry on, of course, but if you wanted to resign from the Navy before your 12 years were complete, you had to pay the Government a certain amount of money equivalent to the years you were about to miss out on. My contract in the Navy would have been finalized in 1965, but the Sinhala-only policy of the ...

“CANCER CAUTION” – By Des Kelly   This was indeed an astounding message coming to us from a Professor of Medicine, which I felt compelled to pass on to every reader of eLanka, hoping that they, in turn, would pass the message on to family and friends.           This writer suffered and beat the big C twice, without going through the Chemotherapy, Radiation-therapy etc,, etc., and am glad of it, because I hear, from friends who have had this dreaded disease in one form or another, that often, the treatment is far worse than the cure. Anyway, let this Professor tell us all about it. My best regards to him. We should have more people of his calibre cautioning us the money-making rackets out there.
