DESMOND KELLY

If you need a friend – By Des Kelly   I have  been getting a few of these recently. They are all beautiful stories in pictures. I know you’ll feel the same when you have a look. With so much misery in the World, at the moment, picture-posts like these help psychologically, I think, and if possible, should be viewed in eLanka.  Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief)–eLanka.   ...

“BRADMAN OF OLDE CEYLON” – By Des Kelly    Names come and go, but some live on forever. This is one that will never be forgotten as long as Cricket is played in what is now Sri Lanka. Mahdevan Sathasivam was not just a top Cricketer, he was an entrepreneur who loved  organizing entertainment in general, for thousands of cricket fans who would flock around, just to get a glimpse of him, never refusing to sign autographs and obviously loving every minute of keeping his fans happy.  He was quite a Character, born in 1915, and dying in 1977, aged 61 & a half years, was named by Garry Sobers as the best batsman on Earth, and South Africa’s Captain,,the great Frank Worrell said of “Satha”, “he is the best batsman that I have ever seen”.            I am not sure about the reason, maybe ...

“VALE’ EDDIE BAPTIST”  – By Des Kelly   There is not very much more that I could add to the excellent tribute to Eddie, by Chris. Lawton, simply to say that, as another Royal Ceylon Navy man, I too had the pride and privilege of serving with Eddie who was at our main Naval Land Base, H.M.Cy.S. Gemunu, Colombo Fort.  If I remember this correctly, Eddie was a “Killick” or Leading Seaman in the Executive Branch of the Navy in which I joined up as a Supply Assistant in 1953. This, I remember very clearly. Eddie Baptist was one Sailor, admired, looked up to, and totally respected by both the Officers and Men of all branches of the Navy, and we had many of them. He had this certain Charisma, afforded to very few. Even as a Leading Seaman, he could “order” junior ratings like us to do our ...

“MURDER, SHE WROTE” – By Des Kelly  The actual book titled “NOBODIES TO SOMEBODIES” was written by a certain Dr.Kumari Jayawardena, of Olde Ceylon, who was obviously just as good at wielding a pen, as she was, a Stethoscope. I am uncertain as to how many other books this talented female Doctor has written, but did read this particular bit of Ceylon History that fascinated me. Of course, I would like to thank her for giving me the chance to get my mind off the Corona-Virus that happens to be on everybody’s mind at the moment, and share this amazing story with all eLanka readers, everywhere.  ...

“COMRADES IN ARMS”    – By Des Kelly There are dozens of stories about them, various animals and even birds like pigeons who have been these loyal “Comrades-in-Arms”, giving invaluable aid to their Masters & Mistresses, both in Peacetime & War. Going back, into history, horses come to mind. Hundreds of then fighting together with their masters riding them, in battles lasting for hours, dying with them, if beaten, loyal o the very end. Little trained pigeons, carrying messages for their carers, for kilometres, and sometimes being shot, for their trouble, and of course, Man’s best friends, dogs, of all shapes and sizes, doing what was necessary to protect their human mates, even to the death, if need be.             These, then, are some of the Comrades-in Arms that  this story is about. Read it carefully my friends, and even if you are not an animal ...

“THE WONDER OF PONDERISMS” – By Des Kelly   If my memory serves me correctly, this is the 2nd batch of Ponderisms that I have served up for all readers of eLanka. Anyway, for the want of something to do, rather than be in lockdown, constantly hearing the word Corona-Virus on television, where before, we were inundated with words such as unprecedented and catastrophic, I do suggest that our good readers become even slightly more educated by digesting this important information. ...

“ROLL ALONG” – By Des Kelly     Now that the rush for toilet paper is nearly over, I thought that this bit of history would solve the mystery.           History Lesson on Toilet Paper! The last one is the best– Queen Elizabeth II Wonder what Trump is using? The first recorded use of toilet paper was in 6th Century China. By the 14th Century, the Chinese government was mass-producing it. 3.. Packaged toilet paper wasn’t sold in the United States until 1857. Joseph Gayety, the man who introduced packaged TP to the U.S. had his name printed on every sheet. 5. Global toilet paper demand uses nearly 30,000 trees every day. That’s 10 million trees a year. It wasn’t until 1935 that a manufacturer was able to promise Splinter-Free Toilet Paper.( Before it was “OUCH”!!??) Seven percent of Americans admit to stealing rolls of toilet paper in hotels. Americans use an ...

“THE AIR THAT WE BREATHE” – By Des Kelly     Another aspect of this “Coronavirus”, the air that we breathe. I have just received this post from our friend Charles Schokman and, although brief, makes for very interesting reading. It tells us all that we owe God heaps of money, a debt that most of us do not even think about.            This little story is something that all my readers will not forget in a hurry, and I say “thank you, Charles” for sending it out, helping everyone to appreciate the simple, yet essential facts of life, as we know it.            I also take my chance to wish ALL our readers a very Blessed Easter. Things are a little different this year, but still, GOD did Rise on Easter Sunday, something that each & every Christian should celebrate, no ...
