St Paul’s Kelaniya Benevolent Fund (Aust) Inc
(in memory of Mrs Florence Senewiratne RIP, former Teacher & Vice Principal)
This Benevolent Fund was established in 2006 for the purpose of collecting funds to facilitate the education of under-privileged students of St Paul’s Kelaniya, Sri Lanka.
We have continued to sponsor the students, together with our private sponsors, with 42 being sponsored in 2026. Twenty students have been sponsored by Fevronoco Maintenance Pty Ltd from 2024. A huge thank you to Dayan Sisouw and Enviroscope. Thank you also to our other private sponsors.
It is pleasing to note that the 2015 Head Girl was a student sponsored by us. In addition, many have completed Advanced Level (equivalent to the VCE) and gone on to university or the workforce. If not for your support of us, these students would not have attended school, leave alone completed their schooling with such wonderful opportunities – this is a huge achievement indeed, and we congratulate those students.
The sponsorship covers educational materials (books and stationery), uniform (including shoes and socks) and school bag; and includes students from all backgrounds from Year 1 to Year 13. One may ask why a student attending a government school needs to be sponsored. We were advised that these students could not afford the basic requirements such as books, clothing etc. This is where the Fund and private sponsors come in! Without this support, these students may not have had an education.
Student bio-data are collected by the PPA in Sri Lanka whose President is the Principal. The details are forwarded to the Fund committee in Australia who then makes the final decision on the students to be sponsored. The PPA in Sri Lanka manages the Fund account established in Sri Lanka for this purpose. One of the scholarships students who has now completed her education assists the Vice Principal (on a voluntary basis) in managing the scholarship programme. In Australia, fund-raising and management of the activities are the responsibility of a small committee, comprising friends of St Paul’s and their spouses.
