Source : stcobasydney On Australia Day, the sun shone brightly down on Sydney, a perfect public holiday.  The teams donned their college cricket uniforms, gathered at the Punchbowl Oval, for an early morning breakfast readying themselves for the annual 28th Royal Thomian Opens, Masters and Classics encounters. This year STC OBA hosted the Annual NSW Royal Thomian Cricket Carnival with the planning done in close association with RC. Beverley’s tireless community work earns her an Australia Day honour – By Brendan Rees Source : southbanklocalnews Beverley Pinder, a former City of Melbourne councillor, businesswoman, and Southbank Rotarian, has been awarded an Australia Day honour for her service to the community through a range of organisations. Ms Pinder, also Australia’s Miss Universe winner in 1978, was named a recipient of the Medal of the Order of Australia in recognition of her strong work ethic and dedication to helping others through charitable work. A capacity crowd of 950 people enjoyed Hornsby Shire Council’s combined 2022 Australia Day Celebrations and Citizenship Ceremony in near-perfect weather and amid beautiful parkland surrounds, yesterday (Wednesday 26 January).  Australia Day On January 26 in 1788, 11 convict ships from Great Britain landed at what is now Port Jackson in New South Wales, where Governor Arthur Phillip raised the British flag to signal the beginning of the British colony. Since the early days of the British colony, Sydney has marked January 26 using various names, such as Anniversary Day, First Landing Day and Foundation Day. This gradually evolved into ‘Australia Day’, and other states and territories officially adopted the name in 1935. Although celebrations originally focused on the anniversary of the British occupation of New South Wales, since 1979, the federal government has promoted an Australia Day that was less British and more Australian in the hope of unifying Australia’s increasingly diverse population. What greeted them was a typical Sri Lankan breakfast organised by Royal. By the time all enjoyed their fill, the skies cleared on the picturesque Ingleburn Oval, the picket fenced ‘turf wicket’ for the open game and the synthetic wicket for the Classic and Masters encounters. Ingleburn ground management had taken great care in preparing the grounds and all facilities, this enabled teams to settle in quickly for the matches in time. FIRST NATIONS AT FIRST LIGHT ON AUSTRALIA DAY 2021 IN SYDNEY For the first time on Australia Day, the Sydney Opera House sails have been lit up at dawn with Indigenous art as a poignant recognition of Australia’s First Nations people. Shortly after first light, the Aboriginal flag was raised alongside the Australian flag on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
