Colombo Port City: A new Dubai or a Chinese enclave?-By Anbarasan Ethirajan Officials say the city being built in the sand will rival other financial centres such as Dubai, Singapore or Hong Kong Source:BBC “An economic game changer” is how officials describe Colombo Port City, a shiny metropolis soaring out of the water along the Sri Lankan capital’s seafront. Next to Colombo’s leafy business district, the huge expanse of sand reclaimed from the sea is being transformed into a high-tech city which will host an offshore international financial centre, residential areas and a marina – prompting comparisons with Dubai, Monaco or Hong Kong. “This reclaimed land gives Sri Lanka a chance to redraw the map and to build a city of world class proportions and functionality – and compete with Dubai or Singapore,” Saliya Wickramasuriya, a member of the Colombo Port City Economic Commission, told the BBC. But critics question ...

Colombo Port City: Gains to state coffers-By Eng. D. Godage Source:Island The Colombo Port City is a special economic zone and international financial centre and it is an important concept for the country’s economic enhancement. It is considered an extension of the existing Colombo Central Business District. In order to achieve the expected goals, it is necessary to manage the Port City in an efficient manner. Existing institutions like the Urban Development Authority UDA, Colombo Municipal Council, Board of Investment BOI are not involved in the Port City management. Many will agree that the China-funded Colombo Port City (CPC) is an ambitious and a giant project that has the capacity to be a make or break factor of this island-nation’s economy in the years to come. The legal infrastructure carries equal weight as, or even more weight than, the physical infrastructure when it comes to the successful operation of this economic hub-to-be of the country. ...

“FROM THE ISLAND OF SLAVES” – By Des Kelly  I remember Slave Island very well. While it was quite handy to the Fort of Colombo, it wasn’t even “in the running” finance-wise. While I am uncertain of the details of this “Sorry-Suburb”, I guess that it was a focal point from which Slaves were procured, to be the Servants of the rich and famous. It did come under the jurisdiction of Colombo 2, and quite possibly had some input into the building of “Elephant House” (the Slaves, I mean), a fairly large, but ordinary 1 storied building, taken over, and managed by the “Suddhas”, who served their customers with the best butter, cheese, puddings, eclairs, chocolates, etc., that we, in Colombo 4 (Bambalapitiya) couldn’t afford.       Yes, I remember Slave island and Elephant House very well, but look at the joint now. From the time when a ...
