Sri Lanka’s Plight & Light – By Dr Harold Gunatillake Website: www.Doctorharold.com Transcript: Cardinal Ranjith appeals to Pope to solicit aid for Sri Lanka “Fix responsibility on those accountable” Colombo Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith says that the need of the hour is the initiation of a high-profile investigation to find out how this country was dragged down to its present plight of being a beggar nation, fix responsibility for these crimes and find ways to recover the money stolen from the people. “People have a right to know how the foreign reserves that had been at around seven to eight billion US dollars had dropped to zero within two years,” the Cardinal said at the Feast of the Sacred Heart Mass at the Ragama Hospital Chapel last week. He asked how the gold stocks in the Central Bank had disappeared and why were they wasted irresponsibly. “The disappearance of the gold ...

Kangaroo flop at Pallekelle – Trevine Rodrigo (Melbourne – eLanka Sports editor)   Australia will question their resolve after they blew a golden opportunity to take a commanding one-day stranglehold over Sri Lanka when a flurry of wickets fell to give the home team a series levelling 24 run win at Pallekelle.  In a second rain affected game in Sri Lanka’s Hill Capital, the Duckworth-Lewis method this time favoured the plucky Lankans who defended a moderate total against much against the tide of expectation.  The Australians currently decimated by injuries to key players have found handy replacements from the squad and have even dug deep into the touring A team to fill in vital spots as the series moves to Colombo for the deciding three games left.  Sri Lanka have not had much success in the one day format in recent times and the win will raise all expectations of ...

Blue Ocean Group Stands Tall During Challenging Times  Construction industry Sri Lanka’s construction industry contributes to about 7.1% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country and employs more than 650,000 workers. Despite the economic slowdown faced globally across all industries and the resultant optimism dent within the real estate and construction sector, the Colombo District Land Valuation Indicator (LVI) reported an overall 6.8% growth rate in the first half of 2021.    Post-pandemic situation & subsequent economic crisis After dealing with the many hurdles that the pandemic had thrown, the Sri Lankan economy moved into a state of an unprecedented economic crisis in late 2021. As a result, the construction and real estate sectors have undergone various challenges that had caused many smaller players to drop out of the market. Many others have developed a high-risk “hit and run” approach with their projects due to the scarcity of resources ...

Some Street names in Colombo OLD and NEW – By Hemal Gurusinghe For those who grew up in a different era and left Sri Lanka long ago, will now be lost if they were to find directions in Colombo by their current street names. Politicians made a great deal about changing street names.  Perhaps to display their “Nationalism”, maybe an easy con to fool the people. This mania of changing street names happens all the time and everywhere.  London changed streets named after colonial characters whose reputations are now in question.  The irony is that it is Saddiq Khan, the Mayor of London, who is presiding over these changes in the aftermath of Black Lives Matter protests.  Unlike Colombo, New Delhi (and other state capitols) renamed their colonial era street names after internationally famous people, like Nelson Mandela.  In Colombo, one hardly knows some of the characters whose names adorn ...

Whirlwind Shanaka rocks Aussies – by Trevine Rodrigo (Melbourne – eLanka Sports editor) https://www.elanka.com.au/watch-cricket-highlights-sri-lanka-vs-australia-t20-series-june-2022/ If there was a performance that exemplified the adage “glorious uncertainties of cricket” it was given profound meaning by Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka who single-handedly steered his country to an unlikely win over Australia at Pallekelle. The high riding Aussies who had clean swept the Lankans in Colombo to take an unassailable series lead and was on course for a clean sweep of the three game contest, reckoned without Shanaka, who bludgeoned the hitherto feared attack to all parts of Sri Lanka’s Hill country for a 25 ball 54 that will live long in the minds of those who watched his epic knock apart from the shell shocked Aussies.  Marcus Stonis possibly summed up the outcome best by saying “We probably got ahead of ourselves”, not expecting Sri Lanka to chase down what seemed like an ...

Scared of hunger, Sri Lankans are willing to risk their lives on boats – By Chris Barrett Source:theage.com.au Sri Lanka/Singapore: At a fish market in Negombo, an hour’s drive north of Colombo, Mallika Fernando had a message for me via my interpreter. “Tell him to take us to Australia by boat,” said the 57-year-old fish seller, as she struggled to offload what she had at her waterfront stall last week She was only half joking. Sri Lanka’s crippling economic collapse has seen the prices of everything – from fish to rice, to petrol – soar, triggering a food security crisis in a nation already bankrupt. Now, as people struggle to make ends meet, some are looking for a way out and the boats towards Australia have resumed. Last month, on the morning of the federal election, a small trawler was intercepted by Australian Border Force west of Christmas Island. Its 12 ...
