The Hon Mangala Samaraweera – by Gajalakshmi Paramasivam The Hon Mangala Samaraweera’s life is to be celebrated. His body is no longer with us but his contribution to our Common Sri Lanka has become nuclear power. I expressed my feelings as follows through Ms Sharmini Serasinghe twitter page: ‘Dear Hon Mangala Samaraweera , You served our country positively and thank you deeply for your contribution to Democracy.’ To me everyone contributing to the commonness of Sri Lanka becomes positive Energy for Sri Lankans. I wrote as follows about this in my book: ...

VALID PROTESTS IN DEMOCRACY – Gajalakshmi Paramasivam Adaderana report – ‘Dozens arrested at protest in front of Presidential Secretariat’ states: [Police Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated that statements are being recorded from the arrestees. They are to be produced before the court under provisions of the Quarantine & Prevention of Diseases Ordinance, the Penal Code and the National Thoroughfares Act.] We have had similar protests here in Australia also and they were stated to be specifically against the governments’ rules regarding Covid. When are such protests moral in democracy? In democracy – the power of the People is vested in the government. The power is that of belief. Hence, even though government has majority votes, minority that believes through an adverse form has the power to defeat it. This was manifested twice in Sri Lankan Parliament where Tamils became the official Opposition. The first was in 1977 which confirmed the ...

Health Silk Road or Pandemic Silk Road? By Gajalakshmi Paramasivam The weather was good today and I decided to take a walk along Coogee Beach. I noticed many without masks and also many seated on the benches. Last week I was informed by the Police that sitting down was against the rules. I thought about this and tried to work out the impact of our respective actions on the spread of the virus. As lay persons, most of us take the word of those in authority as right – until proven otherwise. Given that I am not a medical expert – I took the word of the Police as that of the government. It is my belief that any law, made in a ‘free’ environment as per the conscience of the law maker would work for her / his group and the value would spread itself exponentially. Hence Universal Franchise. ...

JAFFNA JUSTICE HERITAGE AND THE NEW MAYOR – by Gajalakshmi Paramasivam Source:Australian Tamil Management Service Mr Visvalingam Manivannan was recommended to us when we were looking for a lawyer to represent us in High Court of Jaffna. As our Attorney, there were times when I was dissatisfied with Manivannan’s service. But as a person he was always respectful of my wisdom in the issue and this brought us victory as a team against the opposition team of Colombo  lawyers led by the mighty Shanki Parathalingam PC – in successfully obtaining Leave to Appeal. I – a lay litigant –  prepared the Leave to Appeal application within the 14 day time period – part of which was from our lawyer daughter’s home in Melbourne. I mention my lawyer daughter because I believe I contributed to her becoming a lawyer. Since I have not taken credit for it – it is shared ownership ...

Ancestral Powers & Properties – by Gajalakshmi Paramasivam Photo Source: NewsWire.lk The most endangered group during this covid19 crisis in Australia, has proven to be those in aged care facilities. Would we as a society have the new norm of either being independent until we die or ensure that we are taken care of by those whom we took care of.  There were comments from the top that some of these facilities did not confirm acceptable standards. I realised this in the case of a relative more than a decade ago and used my power with the family to have her taken home. When the children obliged, I felt good. Today when I read the Daily Mirror article ‘Lonely death of Miss Ceylon 1962 – What really happened to Jennifer Ingleton?’I felt the urge to share my own belief in this. The article introduces us to the corpus as follows: [A lively and spirited ...
