TRIBUTE TO A TITAN – BY: KRISHANTHA PRASAD COORAY Photo 1 Caption: Lakshman Kadirgamar, former Foreign Minister for Sri Lanka, right, confers with Minister of Information and Media, Source: Times of Sri Lanka FB The loss of Mangala Samaraweera is a devastating blow to statesmanship in Sri Lanka. Despite being a master political tactician instrumental in bringing three of the last four presidents into office, Mangala always thought first about the people of Sri Lanka, and second about politics and how to win elections. “What is saddest is that he passed just as more and more Sri Lankans were beginning to wake ...

Sri Lanka former finance minister Mangala Samaraweera passes away Source:-economynext ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s former finance minister Mangala Samaraweera passed away Tuesday in hospital where he was being treated for Coronavirus, a coordinator for the former minister said. The 65-year-old Samaraweera contracted the virus earlier this month and was receiving intensive care unit (ICU) treatment at the Lanka Hospital, despite being fully vaccinated. When unconfirmed reports surfaced last week that Samaraweera passed, sources close to him said he was in fact on the mend and was responding well to treatment. After Geneva Resolution: What next?-by Laksiri Fernando It should be made clear to the international community that without measures for the prevention of terrorism through national security, sustainable reconciliation and accountability cannot be achieved. It should also be made clear that in Sri Lanka’s view human rights should go along with promoting human duties and responsibilities The adoption of the UNHRC resolution against Sri Lanka is a setback not only to the Government but also to the country and the people. It is however not the end of the world. The Government as the elected authority by the people should now seriously think about the effectiveness of their foreign policies, foreign relations and perhaps personnel who are handling these crucial matters.  Defeating the resolution undoubtedly was a difficult task, among other factors, given the last government was completely following an opposite policy. Who was correct may be a debatable matter ...

SRI LANKA NEWS (AUGUST 2020) – Compiled by Victor Melder A study on the abnormalities and polymorphisms of amphibians found within and outside the Horton Plains National Park has identified a distinct frog species that does not belong to its generic “hourglass frog” classification. The study was conducted by graduate research assistant Praneeth Silva of Sri Jayewardenepura University’s Department of Zoology under the supervision of Prof. W. A. D. Mahaulpatha, senior lecturer and head, Department of Zoology. “Our study on amphibian abnormalities and causes found that Taruga eques species is faced with bigger threats in both localities in comparison to other amphibian species”, Silva said. Within and outside regions of the Sri Lankan Plains, habitat modifications due to human activities were the main threat on Taruga eques. The study revealed a novel pattern polymorphism of Taruga eques in that a variety of the species without the hourglass was identified within ...

SRI LANKA NEWS – JUNE 2019 – By Victor Melder All Muslim ministers in the UNF-led government resigned, yesterday. They had done so to allow the government to bring about reconciliation and conduct an impartial investigation into various allegations, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader, Rauff Hakeem told the media at Temple Trees. The decision had been taken after a lengthy discussion with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and others, Hakeem said. Hakeem requested the government to have an investigation conducted by the CID into the allegations and take legal action within one month if there was ample evidence. The Muslim community and the politicians who represented them had fully cooperated with the authorities to ensure the safety of the country following the Easter Sunday Bombings, and attacks on Muslims had to be condemned, Hakeem said. Although they had resigned from their ministerial posts, they would not resort to any ...
