The transitional 1990s and beyond (JVP-III)-by Rajan Philips Source:Island If the 1980s were tumultuous, the 1990s were more transitional, even if not less tumultuous. In this ‘potted’ history, it is not necessary to recount all the details of the 1990s and the first decade of the new 21st century. Suffice it to focus on developments that have had a continuing influence on current events and the farce of 2021. The UNP and the JVP, which more or less came together in 1977, were gone by 1994, after seventeen years of assorted achievements. The UNP would never return to the same pinnacle of power that it seized in 1977. The JVP with a new generation of leaders transformed itself into a democratic political party with mixed results. The first half the decade saw the disintegration of the UNP under the weight of the presidential ambitions of three rival contenders – President ...

After Geneva Resolution: What next?-by Laksiri Fernando It should be made clear to the international community that without measures for the prevention of terrorism through national security, sustainable reconciliation and accountability cannot be achieved. It should also be made clear that in Sri Lanka’s view human rights should go along with promoting human duties and responsibilities The adoption of the UNHRC resolution against Sri Lanka is a setback not only to the Government but also to the country and the people. It is however not the end of the world. The Government as the elected authority by the people should now seriously think about the effectiveness of their foreign policies, foreign relations and perhaps personnel who are handling these crucial matters.  Defeating the resolution undoubtedly was a difficult task, among other factors, given the last government was completely following an opposite policy. Who was correct may be a debatable matter ...

Tribute: Ladies College girl Viola Welikala (1920-2021) Source:Island January 5, 2021 (LBO) – 100 years is a time period of significance. In the last century people have seen world war, slavery, colonialism, apartheid, nuclear bombs invented and used, the emergence of technology, mobile phones, the internet, and most recently a global pandemic that shuttered the world and will soon have claimed the lives of over 2 million people in the last year alone. The world has changed so much in the last century, and few people have been lucky enough to bear witness to this transformation with a sound mind. One of these fortunate individuals was my grandmother, Viola Welikala. Her elegant soul made it to the age of 100, made it through the tumultuous year 2020, and peacefully departed this world on January 1, 2021. Through the century that was her life, her mind was as sharp as a nail, ...

Koch meets Quest Source:-Island Several well-known personalities were seen at the ‘Future of Tourism’ Summit, held in Colombo, including CNN’s Richard Quest. Quest, as I know, is an English journalist and a CNN International Anchor. He is also CNN Business Editor-at-Large, based in New York City. He anchors “Quest Means Business”, the five-times-weekly business programme, and fronts the CNN shows “Business Traveller”, “The Express” and “Quest’s World of Wonder”. To Sri Lankans, Quest is a familiar face on CNN and one would have noticed his unique way of presentation – charismatic, no doubt. ‘Disco Lady’ hitmaker, Alston Koch, had the opportunity of meeting Richard Quest…at breakfast, before the commencement of the Summit. Alston was quite prominent, at the Summit, because he was on stage performing the song ‘We Are One,’ which was specially put together for this event. The song was written by Alston’s son, Frederick James Koch, ...
