SRI LANKA NEWS  (AUGUST  2024) Compiled by Victor Melder Sri Lanka Customs has achieved an income of Rs. 708 billion from the Rs. 1,537 billion revenue target set for 2024, said Finance State Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya. This success comes despite the suspension of vehicle imports, which is a major revenue source for Customs. In 2018, the last year vehicles were imported, Rs. 204 billion or 22% of the total revenue of Rs. 923 billion was from vehicle imports. The Minister also said that in 2019, 16% of the total income, amounting to Rs. 130 billion, came from vehicle imports. Round Island Lighthouse – beacon to daring seafarers – By Arundathie Abeysinghe Located on top of a small rocky island in Round Island *Trincomalee in the outer harbor of *Trincomalee bay, Round Island Lighthouse also known as Trincomalee Lighthouse or Kevuliya Lighthouse is a round cylindrical masonry tower, 21meters high with a lantern and gallery. Entire lighthouse is painted in white color. The Lighthouse is accessible only by boat. Yet, the island and lighthouse are closed to the public. But visitors can see the lighthouse at a distance from *Marble Beach. The lighthouse is operated and maintained by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority. In 2016, Round Island Lighthouse was renovated and the tower was repainted. The light in Round Island Lighthouse is fixed and can be seen for 16 kilometers (10 miles). Colombo Port becoming most efficient in South Asia – By Maya Majueran Source:ft.lk The trend of using larger container vessels has become obvious as shipping companies believe that the voyage cost per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) would be reduced by increasing the capacity of vessels. This may limit the maritime access of mega-ships to all the ports due to draft restrictions and an increase in port facilities and equipment, because of that larger container ships normally call at fewer ports. As ship sizes increase then it makes fewer port calls but larger box exchanges.  However, mega-ships can only be profitable when fully utilised, without too many port calls. Trinco Port to be devloped as industrial harbour Source:dailymirror.lk Expressions of interest have been called from private investors to develop the Trincomalee Port as an industrial port, Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Chairman Prasantha Jayamanne said today. “There are 2400 hectares of land in Trincomalee Port and we have called for expressions of interest from the potential investors to develop it as an industrial port. We are mainly focusing on local investors,” Jayamanne told a press conference. At the same time Mr. Jayamanne and heads of private terminals and a major stakeholder Ceylon Association of Shipping Agents claimed that Colombo Port is functioning smoothly despite the FOREX issue. “We have decided to allow local customers who face issues to make payments in rupees instead of dollars,” he said.
