A mob of undergraduates stormed the official residence of former Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor Athula Senaratne, and assaulted him and his son besides inflicting considerable damage on his property, over the weekend. What sparked this bestial violence, according to media reports, was an incident where two motorcycles toppled over when the don’s son tried to remove them as they were blocking his path. Neither side to the dispute can be expected to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Only a thorough probe will reveal what actually happened. Resolving human-elephant conflict: It’s High Time to Treat the Root Cause – By Bernard Fernando Photo Source:tripadvisor.com,kidadl.com Arising from requests by the President and the COPA, urging a quick and durable solution with policy changes to protect humans and elephants, the writer initially suggested to treat the crystal-clear root cause for human-elephant conflict by determining the optimum manageable number of wild elephants in our small Sri Lanka through research and exporting the excess, thereby opening an avenue to earn the much-needed foreign exchange too. I have since been informed that export of elephants has been restricted by the State as well as the rest of the world. If it is so, are we to perpetuate the hackneyed, harmful and impermanent strategies like elephant chasing crackers, electrical fences, trenches and bee boxes, etc. which have become obsolete and wasteful investments in the face of these wild elephants that have become wily and aggressive ...

Lord Soulbury, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip at Peradeniya University Source:Thuppahis This striking and rare photograph from 20th April 1954 shows Lord Soulbury leading the young Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip on their way to inaugurate the formal opening of the University of Peradeniya at its “Senate Building” — whereupon Prince Philip displayed acumen in deploying the original words –“more open than usual” when verbally administering the opening. What apt words! This Pix has been sent to me by Gerald Peiris. While the royal duo are clearly the stars of this outstanding moment in the island’s history, I prefer, here, to highlight the importance of two British gentlemen in Sri Lanka’s coming of age: namely, Lord Soulbury and Sir Ivor Jennings.  I conjecture that Jennings is hidden from view in ths picture. It would have been the clout he wielded with Soulbury and the DS Senanayake Cabinet from 1948 onwards that ...
