Merrill J. Fernando: Founder of Dilmah Tea Passes Away Source :  Qld Sri Lankan Newsletter – Dæhæna – August 2023 Merrill J. Fernando – the founder and former CEO of Sri Lanka’s largest and most global tea brand ‘Dilmah Tea’ – passed away on 20 July. The iconic businessperson was aged 93 at the time of his demise. Born in 1930 in Negombo, Fernando received his primary education from Maris Stella College and his secondary education from St. Joseph’s College in Colombo. In 1954, at a time when the island’s tea trade was still under the control of the British, Fernando began working as a tea assistant with Arthur Frederick Jones and his son Dennis Jones at AF Jones & Co. More than 250 people attended the night organised by the Federation of Sri Lankan Organisations of Queensland to felicitate Anton and Bronwen Swan at the Souths Sports Club, Acacia Ridge. Renamed: Kothmale Gamini Dissanayake Reservoir – By Dr Harold Gunatillake Location of the Dam There are about 30,000 reservoirs in Sri Lanka of which the majority were built from the 3rd century BC to the 12th century. These were mainly constructed in the dry zone area- the Northern and Eastern part of the land an area of about 40,000 sq. kilometers (where almost all the tanks are located), These reservoirs were essential in these areas to collect rainwater from the streams for irrigation purposes. During the present century, such reservoirs with a dam were constructed to collect the streaming water not only for irrigation purposes but with the objective of generating hydropower. SUNDAY CHOICE – Kris Kristofferson Why Me Lord Story Told – By Charles Schokman “Why Me” was recorded by Kristofferson in 1972, featuring backing vocals by soon-to-be wife Rita Coolidge and up-and-coming singer-songwriter Larry Gatlin. It was released on the album Jesus Was a Capricorn in 1973, and became the biggest hit of his career.   According to country music historian Bill Malone, Kristofferson wrote the song during an emotionally low period of his life after having attended a religious service conducted by the Rev. Jimmie Rogers Snow.
