Are we seeing a rejuvenation in athletics and cricket?   Source:Dailymirror The recent performances of our athletic team has been an eye-opener. For long years, except for a few individual brilliant performances of individual athletes, we have trailed behind other Asian nations in the field. At the recently concluded Asian Athletic Championships this month, our athletes won three gold medals, two silver and three bronze medals. The team was placed fourth in the overall championship list, behind Japan who bagged a total of 37 medals, China 22 and India 27 medals. This is the highest position Sri Lanka has ever achieved in the history of the Asian Athletics Championships. The previous best position we held was way back in 2002 when the then team finished in 6th position.  Nadeesha Ramanayake started the flow of gold medals when she won the 400 m women’s gold at the 25th Asian Athletic Championships.  ...

Seychelles men and women volleyball teams arrive in Sri Lanka-by Susil Premalal   Source:Dailymirror The men’s and women’s volleyball teams of Seychelles arrived in Sri Lanka today (19).    This is the first time that two national volleyball teams from Seychelles, an East African country, will participate in a tour of Sri Lanka. ACC confirms Asia Cup schedule, final on Sept. 17 at R. Premadasa Source:Dailymirror The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) on Wednesday confirmed the schedule for the Asia Cup starting in August, with Sri Lanka hosting a majority of its games at the R Premadasa. The tournament, which is being played in a hybrid-model with games split between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, will kick off in Multan with Pakistan taking on Nepal on August 30, and Sri Lanka opening their campaign on August 31 against Bangladesh at Pallekele. EU funded SEDR Project completes 5-day training programme for Mediation Training Officers The Supporting Effective Dispute Resolution (SEDR) project, with technical leadership and coordination by The Asia Foundation (TAF), recently completed a five-day Advanced Mediation Skills and Techniques training programme for 20 Mediator Training Officers attached to the Ministry of Justice through the Mediation Boards Commission. The programme was aimed at equipping Mediator Training Officers with advanced mediation skills, enabling them to, in turn, train volunteer mediators to effectively resolve disputes across mediation boards in Sri Lanka. The SEDR project is a four-year initiative funded by the European Union and implemented by the British Council in partnership with The Asia Foundation. During my childhood and growing up years, my neighbor and childhood friend Rai who is the same age as me, celebrates her birthday in May, and mine in July.
