It was a most delightful memorable experience, as we noticed the freedom and the joy on the faces of the local people, welcoming us with both arms, and speaking in Sinhala. The Terrorist war devastated Jaffna and the Mullaitivu districts , and the people suffered from the combats of the Tigers and the defensive forces equally. ...

What is a mutant virus and its significance?-by Dr Harold Gunatillake Transcript: Viruses have no life like bacteria. But it is a lifeless thing simply a bad thing wrapped in protein. The protein inside is called RNA- ribonucleic acid, which has a genetic code. It is just a fleck of protein and genes, a little bit of code in a package with no to-do list beyond hijacking the biology of living things to make copies of itself and spread them to other living things. As I said by themselves, they have no life and dormant until the key they have in the protein spikes unlock the ACE2 lock on the surface of human cells to get in to create the havoc. Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) and DNA are both nucleic acids and along with lipids, proteins and carbohydrates forms the four major macromolecules required for all forms of life. Mutation means ...

Trip to Annivilunthan- 25Km from-by Dr harold Gunatillake   Just after the LTTE war, about eight years back, my wife and I with another friend name late Ken Sellaya, paid a trip to a village called Anaiviluinthan, 25 km interior to Kilinochchi. We travelled from Kandy and took about 10 hour’s drive to get to Kilinochchi. From the town area we turned left onto a sand tract and drove another 25km on Jeyapuram Road. It was all jungle area on both sides of the road, except for a few huts scattered all over. There was an army camp on the way, and just beyond was the village of Anaivilunthan.   The place we visited was a camp composed of about 500 Tamil families of Indian descent, all from the hill tea estates who fled during the 1983 riots. They walked all the way barefooted to Kilinochchi and the government settled ...

Checking your pulse rate is discussed-by Dr harold Gunatillake FRCS, FICS, FIACS,MBBS, AM (Sing)-Health writer   The Pulse rate which you determine at the wrist is directly in communication with your heart rate, and to be more exact to the contractions of the left ventricle of the heart. In short, if the heart beats sixty times per minute, the pulse rate should be exactly the same. In the ECG picture the spike is referred to as R wave and the distance between two R’s would be each pulse beat. Our heart or pulse rate varies every minute of the day, depending on the demands we make on our bodies. At sleep when demands are minimal the pulse rate is at its lowest, and with exercise and other activities it becomes more rapid according to its demand. ...
