DESMOND KELLY

“A tribute in poetry” – by Des Kelly Much has been said/written recently, regards the passing of our longest reigning Monarch of all time, Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth, and, in passing, I noticed this sad, but relevant tribute to her. However, this beautiful ‘piece’ was sent to me by our good friend Charles Schokman, and I think it should be published in it’s entirety for e’Lanka. Please read it folks, it’s a beautiful tribute to a beautiful person.  May she now rest in peace. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka.  Vale—Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth11 on 8.9.2022 Phillip came to me today,  and said it was time to go.  I looked at him and smiled, as I whispered that “I know”   I then turned and looked behind me,  and saw I was asleep.  All my Family were around me,  and I could hear them weep.    I gently touched each shoulder,  with ...

“KING CHARLES lll” – by Des Kelly With all due respect, e’Lanka bids welcome to King Charles lll & his Queen-Consort, Camilla.  To follow in his Mother’s worthy footsteps, is the promise already made, by our new King, and there is no doubt whatsoever, about his pledge, because, after all, he IS his Mother’s Son and as a famous Oxford English phrase tells us,  ‘What is bred in the bone, comes out in the flesh”. Let us therefore believe that this new King Charles lll, will carry on, where his remarkable Mother, Queen Elizabeth ll left off. GOD SAVE THE KING. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...

“PRECIOUS  MEMORIES” – by Des Kelly  I remember her so well. It was 1954, one day prior to her 28th birthday, when the most beautiful Queen of the Commonwealth of Nations set foot in Ceylon, with her Prince Consort, Phillip, to review her “troops” before heading on to Aden. Being in The Royal Ceylon Navy at the time, I was lucky enough to get just a glimpse of one of the most beautiful women on Earth, (and she was, believe me), being 18 years old, and in HER ‘Senior Royal Service’, I, like so many others in the Navy, could not take our eyes off her.  Queen Elizabeth ll was a veritable picture, outside a golden frame. I was PROUD of her then, going on, to be prouder still, of this very young Queen, going on & on through life, keeping the promise she made to her people, come what ...

“TRAMCAR-TESTIMONY” – by Des Kelly Yet another chunk of ‘memory-magic’, coming to all e’Lanka readers around the world, courtesy of Charles (Charlie) Schokman, a good friend of this writer. Charles & his dear wife Claudette have also been residents of Melbourne for quite a long while now, and, like me, stop sometimes to reminisce about our younger years, spent in the Country that is referred to simply  as “Our lovely Island home”.  A big part of our precious memories would have to be about travelling around the Ceylon we knew. The old CTB buses, the trains, the taxi-cabs we used (less often), and also the trams, about which this ‘testimony’ is written. Thank you Charles, & e’Lanka’s regards go out to you & the family. Desmond Kelly (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...

“HOORAY FOR COORAY” – by Des Kelly Dayal Cooray, the author of this little piece, which I thought was quite funny in it’s own way, is the only son of Denis Peiris Cooray, a ‘Supply Commander’ of the Royal Ceylon Navy, under whom I served. D.P. Cooray was truly an Officer & a Gentleman, as the saying goes, and I was proud to be the Supply Assistant he chose, to visit our Government Stores daily in order to procure everything our Navy needed to keep ourselves going, at the time.  It was a ‘special job’ and I was proud to do it, keeping out of  trouble, which I seemed to be prone to, whenever I was not at work.  Until quite recently, I knew Dayal only as a young lad, at his Dad’s home in Torrington Square, Colombo, very close to one of the oldest and most famous  Radio Stations ...

“ELVIS IN CONCERT” – by Des Kelly Many of you Elvis Enthusiasts have already seen Elvis in action, I am sure, but, while watching You-Tube, just a few hours ago, I suddenly saw this particular introduction to an Icon that will never be forgotten which said ELVIS IN CONCERT. 77 Full Concert (Multi-Camera)16.9 HD REMASTER)EDIT. A new experience. Enjoy.  Alex Darcy.871K views-Published on 31 May 2018., to be exact, so I decided to watch it. I was more than happy that I DID WATCH IT. This is why I have decided that our Members & Readers of e’Lanka, given the chance, should also take in the magnificent talents of Elvis, the undoubted King of Rock n Roll, in what was his final farewell to his millions of fans, the writer being one of them.   Please understand, people. This ‘Show’ is quite a lengthy one, so please watch it when you ...

“Bolanda Katha Kiyala – Keerthi Pasquel – by Des Kelly   The guy singing the song, which was composed by a singing group named the Los Flamencos, before they added the adjective ‘Super’ to their name (please someone, correct me, if I am wrong), is, like ‘Dilhani’, written by the late, great, Clarence Wijewardena, another beautiful Sinhala Song, “covered” equally well, by Keerthi Pasquel, whom I did meet many years ago, when he was doing a concert in Melbourne.  A nicer, more humble bloke, would be impossible to find. He was also an experienced bass-guitarist, who went on to teach the youngsters in Sri Lanka later on, to play  both bass and rhythm/lead guitars, to the best of his ability. I have not had the privilege of meeting many of their famous Entertainers, but was lucky to meet just a few, and Keerthi certainly was one of them. ...

“LANKAN DUTCH BURGHERS” – by Des Kelly A comprehensive mini-history of the Dutch Burghers in Sri Lanka today, this particular story has been excellently portrayed, will take quite a lot of reading, but will be enjoyed by any avid Dutch Burgher, anywhere. This writer is only part Dutch Burgher though, primarily on my Maternal side.  My Mum was a Miss Kriekenbeek whose ancestors were actually Founder members of the famous Dutch East Indian Shipping Co., who originally set foot on the Island of Ceylon, that, everyone knows, was “ruled” by the Dutch, for a period of time. ...
