The Ceylon Society of Australia AGM and Social 2019 – By Sunil de Silva (Photos thanks to Mahal Selvadurai) 30 November 2019 saw an exceptional event – the Social following the Annual General Meeting of the Ceylon Society of Australia. The venue was the meeting hall at the Pennant Hills Community Centre, a hall converted beyond recognition, the handiwork of Pauline Gunewardene, the President of the CSA, with the assistance of several members of the Committee. The record attendance of 168 was comfortably accommodated at twenty tables festooned in eye catching décor in a thematic red pattern and set with wine glasses and ready for the entree of patties and cutlets ‘dished out’ by Manjula of Dish Catering. A fitting prelude to a mouth watering buffet dinner and dessert. Pauline clearly was the Queen of the Evening. First deftly steering the AGM which preceded the Social by half an hour ...

Vicarage murders hold guests spellbound – from Doug Jones More than 130 guests gathered on May 26 at the Ceylon Society of Australia’s second 2019 public meeting to hear CSA member Ananda Amaranath’s dissertation on “Murders at the Vicarage – The Mathew Peris Case.” His listeners were held spellbound as he explained the intricacies of a rare, classic case in Sri Lankan legal history where an accused was found guilty based on the observations and medical opinions of numerous medical professionals who assisted the Judges of the Trial-at-Bar to arrive at a guilty verdict. The speaker illustrated his talk with clips from the Chandran Rutnam- produced movie “According to Matthew” starring Alston Koch and Jacqueline Fernandez, based on the affair and the murders, which he encouraged guests to view when possible.         This was the famous murder case when Rev. Mathew Peris was the Vicar of St Paul’s Anglican Church in ...

Ceylon Society of Australia’s annual ‘fest’ best ever! – by Doug Jones – Photos thanks to Mahal Selvadurai “Amazing night! splendid evening, outstanding success, enjoyed it immensely, Well done – super show!!! Everything went off like clockwork.” That was how many of the 140 members and guests described their experience of the Ceylon Society of Australia’s Annual Dinner and Social held at the Pennant Hills Community Centre hall on November 24. In more ways than one, the success of the evening was due to the enterprising leadership of the society’s new President Pauline Gunawardene, the first female to hold that office since inception. The entire committee and other members and friends spared no pain in ensuring that the society’s annual function would be the ‘best ever’. Having ‘live’ music provided by Roger Menezes was an innovation, along with the introduction of a session of ballroom dancing to terminate the evening was a ...
