Status of COVID-19, Flu and the Path Forward – By Dr Kanthi Dias Source: Monthly e-Newsletter The year 2020 is not panning out to be as good as we expected. COVID-19, this invisible, powerful enemy has shattered everyone’s hopes and dreams and brought the whole world to its knees. It has had some effect on every human life on this earth irrespective of caste, creed, religion, and nationality. Australia’s performance has been outstanding in keeping a lid on COVID-19 due to well-co-ordinated combined efforts by national cabinet in collaboration with the Aus-tralian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPCC). Currently positive cases in the community is becoming very low and ¾ of the total cases are overseas acquired. Although we have very low levels of community trans-mission, a second wave of Corona virus infection is a real possibility. “SBS SAYS” – By Des Kelly The truth is not only stranger than fiction, but also quite often, much more depressing than fiction could ever hope to be. It will be proven on this SBS television programme, scheduled to start on the 1st of July, 2020. I will make it a point of watching these true stories on the T.V.Channel that I think is the best in Victoria.               In the meanwhile, below is an e’mail forwarded to a past President of the Sri Lanka Cultural Society, Mr.Anu Liyanage, from the SBS, on this particular subject. It makes for some very interesting reading, and as such, I have decided that all eLanka readers should be informed about it.     Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) eLanka. From longtime past President of the Sri Lanka Cultural Society of WA – Anu Liyanage SBS reveals the emotional stories of Who Gets ...

Locked Down in Sri Lanka – By A Fernando “Many of the things we desire are expensive. The truth is that the things that really satisfy us are totally free” Having spent nearly two months in Sri Lanka, just missing mandatory quarantine by a few days, our time in Sri Lanka was an experience we would never forget. I remember wondering whether we were crazy to leave the safety of Australia at this time. Irrespective of the situation in Sri Lanka, we have always travelled extensively in the island. Pre and post terrorist war, tsunami, SARS, Chi gunya and Easter bombings, somehow, we happened to be in Sri Lanka. This time was no different. With the belief “one lifetime is not enough to see what Sri Lanka has to offer” with almost 15 percent of the island made up of national parks and reserves, and world heritage sites, there is ...

Controversies, the totally unnecessary shootings of BOTH Black & White people by Police, we’ve had several Police persons shot fatally, in the line of duty, we are now putting up with Protestations on perhaps everything that one can protest about, we, with the rest of the World, are now in recession, what else could go wrong?,  ...

THE HON ALAN TUDGE MP MINISTER FOR POPULATION, CITIES AND URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE ACTING MINISTER FOR IMMIGRATION, CITIZENSHIP, MIGRANT SERVICES AND MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS In-person citizenship ceremonies to resume 8 June 2020 The Government has resumed in-person citizenship ceremonies with local councils invited to begin hosting small events where safe to do so and in line with the latest health advice. We moved quickly to implement online ceremonies when COVID-19 restrictions came into effect and more than 25,000 became Australian citizens via this method. These online ceremonies meant people could pledge their allegiance to Australia at a time of great uncertainty and become citizens despite face-to-face restrictions. Now that restrictions are easing, councils will once again be able to host small ceremonies in line with the public gathering requirements in their state or territory. Online ceremonies will continue for councils unable to host physical events safely so we can continue to see ...

Taking on a mantle in the face of COVID-19: By Kumudini Hettiarachchi   Source:sundaytimes As the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo, celebrates its 150th anniversary tomorrow (June 1), its new Dean, Prof. Vajira H.W. Dissanayake talks about taking the institution forward, infusing it with advanced technology 1870 and 2020 – 150 years have elapsed but the health issues seem to be the same. It was yaws, a contagious bacterial disease which felled a large number of people in the Wanni then, while it is the highly-infectious COVID-19, which is rampaging through the world including Sri Lanka, leaving a trail of disease and death now. Similar to the Faculty of Medicine, Colombo, being born to meet the demand for health facilities across the country due to yaws, this august institution stands on the cusp of pre and post-COVID-19 in 2020, with a re-birth being essential to face the challenges of the new order. ...
