Tear Gas: What you need to know- By Prof.Kirthi Tennakone A file photo of the police firing tear gas during a recent protest National Institute of Fundamental Studies Source:Island We hear incidents of tear gas deployment somewhere almost every day and too frequently in Sri Lanka these days. The Police direct tear gas shells to crowds they determine as unruly. The tactic serves the purpose of avoiding the bullet, or other lethal methods of combat, to deter an emotionally agitated mob about to engage in a criminal offence. However, indiscriminate use of tear gas poses health risks hard to ignore. The United Nations Human Rights Commission has classified tear gas as a less – lethal weapon, and said that even less-lethal weapons must be employed only when they are subject to strict requirement of necessity and proportionality, in situations in which other less harmful measures have proven to be clearly ...

Australia’s population is bigger, more diverse, census shows – By Timna Jacks Source:smh.com.au She’s a woman in her 30s who lives with a partner and has a child. She was born in Australia, went to a government school and finished year 12. She lives in a capital city and her family brings in about $3000 a week. That is the picture painted of the average Australian in the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2021 census data, released on Tuesday. While the number of people who share all those traits may be small, this is the imperfect picture drawn from the first tranche of data collected on August 10 last year, when many of us were in lockdown to halt the spread of COVID-19. More Australian families and households were together on census night last year compared with census night in 2016, with 96 per cent of people counted at home rather ...

The Pond, Butterflies and Rainbow – by Dr.Tilak S. Fernando   Recently the surgeon Dr. Athula Withanage translated into Sinhala for the first time, ‘Evgeni Onegin,’ a Russian romantic novel written in verse and a masterpiece of the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin.  Simultaneously, he translated it into English, making it the 46th English translation. This achievement by Dr. Athula Withanage can be hailed as a historical event, as it was declared impossible to achieve by many authors in the past including the great translator, Oruwala Bandu. This was because of cultural differences and the era (1880) when it was written, as well as the different meaning Alexander Pushkin gave his own poetic words.  Dr. Withanage escaped the shackles of rhyming by producing the masterpiece in Sinhala using the unique form of ‘Nisandas Kavi’.  The books were presented to the First Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Sri Lanka, and the ...
