When Ceylon’s stickers beat world-class Madras and Mysore-BY DENNIS DE ROSAYRO Source:Sundayobserver Before continuing from my series on Ceylon/Sri Lanka’ great hockey players, I would like to touch on some noteworthy performances by our hockey teams. After not being able to participate at the 1960 Rome Olympics, the Federation’s next target was the 1962 Asian Games in Djakarta. Freddie White, who was the vice captain on tours to India in 1957 and 1959, was selected as the captain of Ceylon for the 1963 Asian Games. Unfortunately, he withdrew from the team, citing the non-selection of two players, whom he felt were automatic choices. The reserve goalie, K. Tharmarajah, whose idol was Freddie, followed suit. This was a huge blow and our performances were below par, losing to lower ranked teams, Indonesia 0/1 and Singapore 0/3, among others. Ironically, Freddie was selected to captain the 1966 Asian Games team to Bangkok ...

White kept India’s mighty Olympic hockey team at bay in first unofficial Test By DENNIS DE ROSAYRO   Source:sundayobserver.lk The Indian Olympic team playing a more constructive game gained a convincing yet unspectacular 2-0 victory over Ceylon in their first unofficial hockey Test played at the Police Park, Bambalapitiya. A Mylvaganam (Govt Services and Tamil Union C&AC) was appointed as captain of the Ceylon team. Nine members of the team selected were representing Ceylon in an international match for the first time. Besides Mylvaganam who played for Ceylon against the 1948 Indian Olympic team led by Krishan Lal, who incidentally was coach of the Indian team, the other international was goalkeeper Freddie White who made his debut in 1955 against Pakistan. Of the 11 selected, all except Somasekeran, had represented the Ceylon Hockey Federation teams in Ceylon and in India. Somasekeran, however, toured India with the Matale Schools, a couple ...

When the Government Services toppled the reigning hockey champions by DENNIS DE ROSAYRO Image source: MHA Sri Lanka Facebook page   Source:sundayobserver.lk One of the most unforgettable shocks in the field of hockey took place when Government Services toppled reigning champions Mercantile Hockey Association from their pedestal at the third National Hockey Championships of Ceylon in 1958. The tournament favourites were the Mercantile HA having shared the trophy with Matale in 1956 and beating Matale 1-0 in 1957 at Matale. A third time meeting was predicted again. But Government Services turned the form book upside down with a brilliant performance in the final. Pomp and pageantry in typical oriental style marked the opening ceremony. The teams clad in their playing kits strode in procession from the clock tower to the esplanade where the championships were held, escorted by motor cycles and preceded by Kandyan dancers and a majestically dressed elephant, carrying ...
