“WE LIVE & LEARN” – by Des Kelly Once again, something different from Keith Bennett, via Franklyn, so my thanks go out to both. Reading posts like this, makes one feel that however old we are, there is nothing to stop us from experiencing the fact that, no matter who we are, WE LIVE & LEARN. Sequel “Ceylon Christmas Cheer” by Des Kelly – by Joe Paiva I read the previous article which catapulted my memory back to the 1950s, with warm nostalgia. I would have been about 11 years old at that time. I and two of my cousins, did part time casual work at my Grandpa’s departmental store, X P Paiva & Sons, 77 Main Street, Pettah, Colombo during the height of the Christmas period in the mid 1950s. Main Street was the premier shopping precinct in the 1950s, 60s.  My grandpa was the Prince, of the first half of retail businesses.  Trams traversed the length of Main Street,  from Khan Clock Tower, northward and return.  Tram drivers and Conductors were attired in Khaki and  colonial style pith hats for relief from the hot noon day sun. ” Mad dogs, Englishmen in the hot noon sun” At the hight of the hectic Christmas period  ...

CLIMATE CHANGE !! – by Des Kelly           A little message to me from Maxwell Gerreyn, forwarded with the best of intentions, and accepted because any WWW that reminds me of a Canine, male OR female, will always get special attention from a dog-lover like me, even though I don’t have a clue as to who Plimer is. Climate-Change has once again scored the flavour of many months to come, until at least the upcoming elections in Australia, and, BTW, talking about climate change, if you are feeling flustered, hot or humid, wherever you are, why not score a pleasant CC and come to Melbourne, where the weather, even as I write this introduction, is a cool, clear 12 degrees in the shade of the Coolibah tree, where I sit.           Desmond Kelly. “BOXCAR BRILLIANCE” – by Des Kelly Merle Ronald Haggard was born in a converted boxcar at Oildale California on the 6th of April 1937. At the tender age of 3 months, his dad & mum noticed him “keeping time” to the radio music outside his bassinet. It was obvious that he already had music on his brain and in his heart. His dad passed on before Merle was even ten years old, leaving his mum to look after the family. Merle turned out to be a little musical rebel, who quickly picked up an old guitar, left by his dad, disobeyed his mum, and, in his early teens, got involved in various unlawful escapades with other young teenagers, getting themselves frequently into trouble with the police and even into jail on several occasions, prompting him to then also become an “escape specialist”, until finally, he really got into big trouble ...

“THAT’S LIFE” – by Des Kelly          “Some interesting oddities”, as Max Gerreyn calls them, and indeed they are. Happening all around us, as we go through, whatever time God has destined for each one of us, we humans do not seem to notice the quaint goings-on, around our World until some intelligent person decides, with the help of photographs, to show us these strange things that are occuring, even a I write this introduction. There is a phrase that tells us, a picture speaks a thousand words, so here we are , ladies and gentlemen, many thousand words that will both interest and educate you, as you read your e’Lanka newsletter.           Desmond Kelly.  (Editor -in-Chief) e’Lanka.   ...

“LOVE SONGS, LANKAN STYLE” – by Des Kelly      I chanced to hear this video and decided that THIS was a type of music that would be enjoyed by all the good members of e’Lanka, everywhere. They are a Dutch band, this group called The Locomotions, and I had never even heard of them, but then, my forte’ being American 80’s and 90’s style Country Music, I tend to feature legends like Merle Haggard, George Jones and the like, but suddenly, as I was watching You-Tube Music Videos, The Locomotions popped up, and, as I do, I decided that because we are now in “Escape-Mode” in Melbourne, after weeks of Lock-down, this was a good time to get the folk back dancing to some good music, so here they are, my friends, “The Locomotions Compilatie Love Songs”, especially for you. Hope you enjoy this video. Desmond Kelly. (Editor-in-Chief) e’Lanka. ...
